Do巨峰 grapes have seeds? Can the seedless and sweet巨峰 grapes available in the market be eaten?

Do巨峰 grapes have seeds?

巨峰 grapes originally have seeds, but because many people find that grape seeds affect the taste and are麻烦 to eat, a seedless variety of 巨峰 grapes has been developed. Just like "seedless watermelon," during the formation period of 巨峰 grape clusters, treating them with a certain concentration of gibberellin can achieve a seedless effect.

Do 巨峰 grapes have seeds?

Nowadays, there are more and more varieties of grapes, in addition to the "old brands" like 巨峰, Rose Scented, Milk Thistle Grapes, and Small Bees, there are also new varieties like Blueberry Grapes, Ruby, and Sapphire, making it seem like one has entered an ocean of grapes.

Among them, 巨峰 grapes, which are commonly seen in fruit stores, are one such variety.

巨峰 grape varieties generally germinate in mid-April and bloom by late May, with the fruit maturing in July. Although 巨峰 grapes naturally have seeds, seedless varieties have gradually been cultivated.

The seedless 巨峰 grapes seen in the market are produced by spraying a certain dose of plant hormones externally on the fruit, which suppresses seed maturity while promoting fruit development.

How are seedless 巨峰 grapes formed?

Besides the triploid grape varieties cultivated through hybridization and vegetative propagation, the remaining seedless grapes in the market are indeed grown with the help of "birth control pills."

However, these "birth control pills" are not the same as those used by humans and are worlds apart; they are a type of plant growth regulator that inhibits seed development, known as gibberellin.

Grape farmers manually apply gibberellin to grapes to replace the endogenous hormones produced by the grapes themselves, allowing them to set fruit without pollination, thus creating seedless grapes.

Although 巨峰 grapes naturally have seeds, by inhibiting seed development and promoting fruit expansion, seedless 巨峰 grapes can be obtained.

Moreover, normally grown 巨峰 grapes are sparse, and the grapes in a cluster are not uniform in size. After treatment with gibberellin, the weight of an individual grape can increase by about 30%, and they become uniform in size with a better taste.

Is gibberellin harmful to humans?

Gibberellin is a natural plant growth regulator, with about 100 types, and it has a history of more than 60 years of agricultural use.

According to the grape quality and safety risk assessment results of the Ministry of Agriculture over the years, gibberellin is rarely detected in grapes, and the residue in the detected samples does not exceed 0.1mg/kg.

Based on the internationally accepted safety limits, an adult consumer would have to eat 1800 kg of grapes per day to ingest 180 mg of gibberellin, which could be harmful to the body, and this is clearly impossible.

Moreover, gibberellin is used around the period of grape flowering, and by the time the grapes have set fruit, it is generally undetectable.
