Classification of Turbinicarpus
A comprehensive introduction to the classification of the succulent plant Turbinicarpus, including the classification of Turbinicarpus. Next, the editor of this site will introduce it to everyone.
Turbinicarpus (scientific name: Turbinicarpus), also known as Turbinicarpus or Echinocactus, is a genus of very small to medium-sized cacti distributed in the northeastern part of Mexico, including San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas.
Habitat
Turbinicarpus is a succulent plant that mostly grows in limestone soil. Their distribution ranges from altitudes of 300-3300 meters. They are limited by specific growing conditions and will compete with most plants, requiring well-drained soil, usually limestone, sandstone, slate, or gypsum veins.
Turbinicarpus has adapted to extreme ecological niches: more than 80% of the species grow in rock crevices or gravel, and the dust accumulated in the crevices helps root development. Although these plants look very small on the surface, it is difficult for them to survive in such environments, but Turbinicarpus growing in dry environments has very thick roots that can firmly grip the base and store water. Their spines often transform into very thin structures, which can also absorb a lot of water. Their appearance can serve as camouflage to avoid being disturbed by herbivorous animals.
Classification
The classification history of Turbinicarpus is very complex and is often confused with other genera, such as Echinocactus, Mammillaria, Gymnocalycium,乳突球属, Neolloydia, Normanbokea, Selenicereus, Obregonia, Austrocylindropuntia, and Toumeya. This is because over the past 200 years, there have been new understandings of the relationships and affinities within the Cactaceae family.
There are many different opinions on the classification of Turbinicarpus, but based on fruitology, biogeography, DNA analysis, ecology, floral characteristics, hybridization tests, morphology, ontogeny, and seed characteristics, it is concluded that Rapicactus should be an independent genus, and Turbinicarpus can be subdivided into two subgenera.
