The Akamisu plant is spherical in shape, with no large radish roots, mostly small fibrous roots. It has 5-6 pieces of amber-colored radial spines, with the newly grown spines being waxy yellow and more vibrant, which gradually fade over time to become creamy white or yellow-brown spines. It has about 12 ridges, with the spine bases arranged on the wart-like protrusions of the ridges. It blooms very beautiful red flowers, usually in early summer. The flower buds grow from the side of the ball, with the base of the cylindrical flowers covered with fine spine bases. The plant requires cross-pollination.
