The Daisy Wart Ball is a species of the Mammillaria genus, native to the mountains of Durango, Mexico at an altitude of 2200 meters. It was discovered in 1966 and named scientifically in 1968. It does not have a Chinese character name in Japanese reference books and is temporarily named based on the phonetic translation of its species name. It can be considered a relatively late-discovered new species in the Mammillaria genus.
It has a dainty plant with round or cylindrical stems, flowers in white or purple, blooming from April to June, and is cross-pollinated. After pollination, the seeds are not too numerous and can easily hide in the crevices of the warts. The epidermis is olive green with a purple-red tint, especially noticeable in winter. The warts are small and soft, the areoles are round with hair, and the white radial spines are numerous and fine, arranged in a circular pattern on the areoles, with very fine central spines that are white. In May, purple or pink flowers emerge from the side axils of the stem warts, with flower diameters ranging from 4 to 6 centimeters or larger.
In the Mammillaria genus, the Daisy Wart Ball is a famous small ball with large flowers, and its areole shape and ball color are very unique, indeed a rare species. During cultivation, a variety with variegation mutations has appeared, which grows faster than the original species, produces many flowers, and has a white flower variant.
The Daisy Wart Ball is not very tolerant of direct sunlight, and during the growing season, it should be watered thoroughly after drying out, with mature plants requiring less water. It is relatively drought-tolerant.
