Black King Pill is a classic variety of the Copiapoa genus. The plant has a spherical or cylindrical shape with 15 to 20 ridges. There are 1-2 central spines, with no radial spines. The areoles and the top of the ball are hairy. The spines are black. Black King Pill flowers are yellow, occasionally pink or light pink. The plant is cross-pollinated. The wild variety of Black King Pill grows very slowly, with a white waxy layer on the surface, but this waxy layer is generally not present in cultivated varieties. There are horticultural Black King Pills that look different from the wild ones. Black King Pill requires partial shade in the summer, not too hot, with the growing season in summer. It can be watered a small amount multiple times during the summer, but the soil should be allowed to dry easily. Overwatering can easily cause rot.
