Opuntia is a deciduous vine-like shrub with woody stems and branches. Leaves are alternate, broadly ovate with or without petioles, thick in texture, usually yellow-green with a reddish tinge, and the underside is purplish-green. Spines are borne at the base of the leaves, flowers are in a paniculate inflorescence, small with peduncles, white in color, and bloom in summer. Its yellow spiny berries are edible and known as "Thorny plum," and its leaves can also be used as a culinary seasoning. It prefers a warm, humid climate and fertile, loose soil. Often used as a potted plant for ornamental purposes.
