Xianrenjing is an upright and massive fleshy shrub covered with edible fruits and thick black spines. The appearance of this plant has a characteristic feature: a flat green stem surface with a ridge axis. The ridge can be brown, reddish-brown, or gray. The areoles are brown. It blooms from late spring to summer with shallow bowl-shaped flowers that can be bright yellow, peach, pink, or red. The fruits are spherical to ovoid and spineless, with colors ranging from deep red, red, purple, or green. The fruits are edible, very sweet, and can be used to make jelly and candy. The juice can be made into a bright red dye. If a person is bitten by insects, the juice can be applied to the affected area for treatment.
