Osmanthus fragrans, as an excellent variety of horticultural flowers, is deeply loved by the elders. As of now, the flower-raising industry is divided into 3 major categories, with the most popular being succulents, followed by flowering plants, and then woody flowers. Osmanthus, jasmine, and other varieties have a long history and are widely recognized by the public.
There are many varieties of osmanthus, and we commonly have six or seven varieties, not to mention some improved genes and grafted osmanthus. There are golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus, red osmanthus, osmanthus fragrans, August osmanthus, and many others. I have raised five varieties of osmanthus, of which only two are the best.
For osmanthus potted at home, it is recommended to choose "golden osmanthus" and "osmanthus fragrans". The blooming periods can be staggered, with flowers every two months. Osmanthus fragrans has fewer flowers but a high flowering frequency, with a strong fragrance that can be smelled from tens of meters away. It grows slowly and requires careful maintenance.
Golden osmanthus has many flowers, with a large amount and a general fragrance, stronger than that of jasmine and gardenia. It has a large plant form, is easy to maintain, has green leaves all year round, and can be admired even when not flowering. It is shade-tolerant, does not easily shed leaves, and has a high cost-performance, but the flowering frequency is low, flowering only twice a year.
Is it better to plant osmanthus fragrans or golden osmanthus at home
I currently have 4 osmanthus trees left, two golden osmanthus, and two osmanthus fragrans. I think these two varieties are the best, suitable for home planting. They can easily survive the winter indoors without any problems and are not prone to freezing. However, August osmanthus and red osmanthus are easily killed by frost during the seedling stage and are not easy to raise.
Good care of osmanthus relies entirely on experience. After a long period of care, osmanthus will naturally thrive. Beginners often encounter problems such as curling and wrinkled leaves and a lack of flowering, which are difficult to solve. I give you a suggestion, which is also my personal experience.
In response to the problems of non-flowering osmanthus and curling leaves, solutions can be approached from these two aspects.
Firstly: Pruning branches
Osmanthus needs to be pruned and combed every year. Without pruning, flowering is reduced by half. Based on my personal experience, the new branches that sprout are more likely to flower, while only a few buds on old branches will flower. Every spring, as soon as the temperature reaches above 18 degrees, you can prune, removing withered, broken, and scarred branches.
When new branches grow out, the new branches that grow in the same year can flower in the same year. With more new branches, the number of osmanthus flowers will also increase accordingly.
