Striped Haworthia, also known as Chicken Tail, Striped Snake Tail Orchid, and Striped Haworthia, is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant of the Liliaceae family. It is native to the tropical arid regions of southern Africa and is widely cultivated worldwide. It prefers a warm and sunny environment, with an optimal growth temperature of 16-20°C. It is drought-resistant and requires well-draining, nutrient-rich soil.
The horticultural varieties of Striped Haworthia include the Large-Leaf Striped Haworthia, with large and wide leaves, and many scattered tubercles on the leaf back; and "Phoenix," a large species with wide and drooping leaves, and dense tubercles on the leaf back.
When potting Striped Haworthia, it is better to plant shallowly due to its shallow root system. Use fertile, well-draining leaf mold soil mixed with coarse sand for cultivation. Keep the potting soil moist during the growing season and fertilize once a month. In winter and the hot summer semi-dormant period, it should be dry, with strict control of watering.
Striped Haworthia is not heat-tolerant and should be appropriately shaded in summer, but if the light is too weak, the leaves will退化 and shrink. In winter, it needs plenty of sunlight, but if the light is too strong, the dormant leaves will turn red.
If the potting soil is too wet in winter, it can cause root rot and leaf shrinkage. If this occurs, remove it from the pot, cut off the rotten part, let it dry slightly, and then replant it in a sand bed. After rooting, it can be transplanted into a pot, or it can be grown in sand for a period and then transferred to a pot after it starts growing.
Another commonly cultivated species in the same genus is Haworthia truncata, also known as Truncated Haworthia. The plant has no stem. The leaves are thick and fleshy, with 7-13 leaves arranged in a row, standing upright and curving inward. The leaves are 2 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, and 0.3-1.2 cm thick, with a truncated top. The leaf color is dark olive green with a rough surface and warty protuberances.
