How to Deal with the Overgrowth of Succulents
Succulents are loved for their cute appearances, but improper care can lead to overgrowth characterized by thin stems and sparse leaves. This article will systematically analyze the rescue plan and scientific care methods for overgrown succulents from both emergency treatment and daily prevention dimensions.
Emergency Treatment Plan for Overgrown Succulents
1. Gravity Shaping Method to Create Cliff Poles
For succulents with thin stems but a full top, select cobblestones that match the direction of stem bending and hang them from the top of the plant with breathable fabric strips. Increase the weight by 5-10g weekly, using continuous gravitational traction to promote lignification. In about 2-3 months, a naturally curved cliff pole shape can be formed.
2. Directed Light Control Traction Technique
Use the pot side placement method for brittle stems: place the pot tilted at 45° on a south-facing windowsill, using the plant's phototropism to guide the stem to naturally bend. Adjust the tilt angle by 10° daily, combined with LED grow lights to enhance lighting, and the shaping can be completed in 20-25 days.
3. Double-effect Treatment of Cutting Propagation
For severely overgrown plants, it is recommended to perform surgical pruning: retain the bottom 2-3 layers of leaves and make a flat cut 5cm from the top using a knife sanitized with alcohol. Apply carbendazim powder to the cut surface, the mother plant can sprout 3-5 new buds, and the cuttings, after 7 days of root drying, should be propagated in a mix of vermiculite and perlite, with a survival rate of over 90%.
Prevention System for Overgrown Succulents
1. Intelligent Light Cycle Regulation
Set a combination of 6 hours of direct light and 4 hours of scattered light daily, and use full-spectrum plant lights for supplemental lighting to 14 hours/day in spring and winter. In summer, use a 50% shade net to filter strong light and rotate the pot regularly to ensure even exposure.
2. Precise Water Management
Establish a soil moisture monitoring system, maintain 30%-40% moisture during the growing period, and water thoroughly along the pot edge with a narrow-mouthed pot. In the winter low-temperature period, switch to the immersion method, watering once a month for no longer than 15 minutes, and stop watering during the summer high-temperature dormancy period.
3. Temperature Difference Stimulation Care Method
Maintain a day-night temperature difference of 10-15°C in spring and autumn, and open windows at night to ventilate and promote plant dwarfing. Combine with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (1500 times liquid) sprayed once every half month to enhance cell wall thickness, making the plant more compact.
Through the above treatment and preventive measures, the overgrowth problem of succulents can be effectively solved and their ornamental value enhanced. It is recommended to check the plant shape monthly and adjust the care plan according to seasonal changes to keep succulents in the best condition.
