What's going on with the softness of Tangyin leaves?
As a star variety in the succulent world, Tangyin is beloved for its unique fan-shaped leaves and reddish leaf margins. However, the issue of soft leaves often troubles enthusiasts during maintenance. This article will deeply analyze the causes through three sets of real comparison photos and provide targeted solutions.
Three core causes of Tangyin leaf softness
1. Softening mechanism caused by low temperature frostbite
When the ambient temperature drops below 5°C, Tangyin's cell fluid will form ice crystals that pierce the cell walls. Initially, it manifests as soft and drooping leaf tips, and continuous freezing will lead to the entire leaf becoming transparent. It is necessary to move it indoors before the frost, using a double-layer insulation method: cover the outer layer with a transparent plastic bag (ventilate for 2 hours daily) and place 3cm thick ceramsite at the bottom to insulate from the cold ground.
2. Pathway of root rot transmission
During the high-temperature summer period after watering, the potting soil temperature can reach over 40°C, and the humid and hot environment accelerates the reproduction of Fusarium. The initial signs of root rot are the bottom leaves becoming soft first, and there is a loose feeling when the plant is shaken slightly. When rescuing, retain 1/3 of the original soil to protect the roots, soak in a metalaxyl-methyl solution (1:1500) for 20 minutes, and replace with a new matrix of volcanic rock: vermiculite = 7:3.
3. Spread of infection from mechanical damage
The creased area of the leaves will secrete sugar substances that attract pathogens, and the area 2cm around the wound will soften within 48 hours. When handling, sterilize the scissors with a alcohol lamp, make an oblique cut on the damaged part to form a drainage slope, and apply a mixture of charcoal powder and carbendazim (2:1) to the wound, keeping the incision dry for 5-7 days.
By controlling temperature, caring for the roots, and standardizing operations, Tangyin can maintain a sturdy leaf shape. It is recommended to use a B1 diluted solution to water the roots monthly to enhance stress resistance, combined with rotating the pot to evenly distribute light to the leaves, bringing back the vibrant and fiery colors of your Tangyin.
