The Orostachys Fish genus belongs to the Crassulaceae family of fleshy plants, which are perennial (usually biennial) succulent herbs. The entire plant dies after flowering, leaves are dark green, flowering occurs in summer and autumn, flowers are white in Japan and red or yellow elsewhere. There is a distinct difference in appearance between the overwintering and summer plants, with winter leaves becoming shorter, old leaves falling off, and leaf edges often having white, feathery edges called "leaf ears," which is the most distinguishing feature from other genera.
