Precautions for Outdoor Cultivation of Succulents
Today, we will introduce the planting content of succulents, the precautions for outdoor cultivation of succulents, let's take a look together with the editor!
When outdoor cultivating succulents, the choice of potting soil is important, making sure the soil is breathable. Breathability is to prevent heavy rain from accumulating in the pot for a long time, which can cause root rot. But also pay attention to water retention, as plants in the Crassulaceae family grow faster when there is sufficient water. The pot I have uses German peat + perlite + vermiculite + kazuma sand, with a little slow-release fertilizer sprinkled on top. If you live in an area with a lot of rain and still want to cultivate outdoors, it's best to use a red ceramic pot, which has better water permeability and breathability. The flowerpots for outdoor cultivation must have drainage holes.
The second precaution is watering. Watering should be combined with the weather conditions. If it is always sunny, generally maintain watering 1-2 times a week, thorough watering when dry. If it is foggy or rainy, do not water. The timing of watering must be right, preferably in the early morning or around 7-8 PM in the evening, because direct sunlight on the potting soil can make it very hot, and watering when the temperature is low in the evening will not hurt the plant. Remember this point!
The third precaution is the intensity of sunlight and the selection of plants for outdoor cultivation. At around 20°C, plants do not need to be shaded. However, during the hot summer afternoons when temperatures exceed 35°C, strong direct sunlight can damage the epidermis of some tender varieties, so proper shading is necessary. When choosing plants for outdoor cultivation, select succulents that enjoy sunlight, and do not recommend those that prefer diffused light. Also, pay attention to the growing period of the succulents, first determining whether they are winter, summer, or spring-autumn type species, and then arranging different care methods according to their different genera. Winter and spring-autumn type succulents start to hibernate after summer and require special care, and it's best not to choose outdoor cultivation for them.
The fourth precaution is ventilation. Outdoor cultivation requires a good ventilation environment. In summer, special attention should be paid to the ventilation environment. A stuffy and humid environment with poor air circulation is not conducive to the evaporation of moisture and is difficult to lower the temperature, which can easily lead to root rot. Since the humidity in the air is higher in summer than in other seasons, good ventilation is essential to ensure the health of outdoor plants. To prevent exposure to the hot sun and extreme weather, the placement of the location is also a science. From a directional standpoint, the southwest is a good position in summer, as the sun begins to set and the light is not as intense, avoiding sunburn. In spring and autumn, choosing the southeast and due south directions to extend the duration of sunlight is better. Also, try to avoid placing them in low-lying areas and open-air spaces to prevent damage from hail and heavy rain.
The last problem that may be困扰ing with outdoor cultivation is pests. My method is to observe more. If pests are found, isolate them first, remove visible pests with a toothpick, and then spray with insecticide, paying attention to the concentration. Plants that have been sprayed should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as it can easily burn the leaves.
