The String of Beads has thin, drooping purple stems that easily branch out to form clusters. The leaves are arranged in a rosette, are succulent, and the green, plump leaves will show a purple hue or become purple when exposed to sufficient sunlight, dry soil, and large temperature differences. There are fine hairs in the leaf axils, and aerial roots easily form on the stems. The String of Beads resembles other plants in its genus such as String of Beads, Purple Buttons, and Green Bells in terms of color and shape. In spring and autumn, it produces thin flower stalks with drumstick-shaped buds, with about 2 per node that open progressively, yellow flowers with 8-10 petals, and yellow anthers.
