Cacti Pollen Preservation
Core Guide: Small knowledge about cacti, cacti pollen preservation, next, the editor will introduce to netizens.
Some cacti require cross-pollination, and it is difficult for ordinary flower friends to have two plants bloom at the same time at home, so the preservation of cacti pollen is an important step. We can only pollinate if we preserve the pollen. There are many methods for pollen preservation, and here are a few commonly used ones.
One, use the bottle method for preservation.
The bottle method involves selecting an appropriate small bottle (usually a penicillin bottle used for injections, with the cap opened and the inside and outside cleaned and dried), then rolling a piece of toilet paper into a tube that matches the size of the bottle opening. The pollen stem is placed in the center of the paper tube and then inserted into the bottle for storage. When using, pull the paper tube out of the bottle and can directly apply it to the pistil of the female parent. This method is simple and easy, and the pollen is less likely to scatter, and has been used by people for a long time.
However, this method can only be stored for a short term, generally effective for 15 days at room temperature, and for three months at 0~3°C, or in the refrigerator's fresh-keeping compartment. Over time, air in the bottle and moisture in the pollen stem can cause the pollen to gradually mildew and become unusable due to humidity.
This method is suitable for short-term use and not for long-term storage. If you want to store it for a long time using this method, you must use a syringe to remove the air inside the bottle, seal it with wax, cover it with two layers of plastic bags, and place it in the freezer. At a temperature below -10°C, it can be stored for about three years. When using, take it out of the freezer and wait for 1~2 minutes before using directly. Using the freezing method for preservation generally can only be used once. If used again after returning to the freezer, the effect is poor, the fruit-setting rate is low, and if it needs to be used repeatedly, it should be reprocessed and placed back in the freezer as soon as possible. If possible, it's best to store each pollen separately, with one in each small bottle, for convenience.
Some people涂抹 glue inside the cap of the small bottle when storing pollen and insert the pollen stem into the glue before placing it in the bottle. This method can only be used at the time and is not suitable for long-term storage because the glue contains a lot of moisture, and the pollen is prone to mildew and spoilage over time, affecting the fruit-setting rate after use.
Two, use silver foil.
Using silver foil, or the foil from a cigarette pack, collect the pollen, remove the pollen stem, or just peel the pollen grains off with a needle and place them directly on the shiny side of the foil. After drying in a clean room for 6 hours, wrap it up and store it short-term at 0~3°C in a cool place or in the refrigerator's fresh-keeping compartment, where it can be stored for 3~5 months. For long-term storage, you can use the same method, wrap it after processing, cover it with two layers of plastic bags, or place it in a dark box in the freezer. At a temperature below -10°C, it can be preserved for about three years. When using, take a little bit and return it to the freezer as soon as possible. It's best to divide it into several small packages and put them in a box, taking as much as needed, which is more convenient.
For large-scale greenhouses with a variety of excellent flower breeds and sufficient pollen sources, it is best to use fresh pollen as much as possible. In general, except for special breeds that need to be stored, the pollen can be directly collected and suitable parents can be pollinated with each other.
