The Maintenance Method of XiaoYu Terrier Gem
This article shares knowledge about the care of the succulent plant XiaoYu Terrier Gem. The following is an introduction by the editor of this site.
XiaoYu/Terrier Gem is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant of the Crassulaceae family, Sempervivum genus, and is a small variety. The plant grows in clusters with tiny branches, the stems are succulent and will gradually become semi-woody over time, but they will not stand upright, generally creeping due to the weight of the head being too heavy for the stem to support. The leaves of XiaoYu are short and spindle-shaped, ranging in color from green to dark red or purple-red, smooth, and the dark red color is especially noticeable in the late autumn and early spring when the temperature difference is large. The leaves of XiaoYu/Terrier Gem are arranged in a环 without petioles, bases connected together, forming a lotus-shaped leaf disk. The plant has clusters of flower spikes with yellow flowers.
XiaoYu/Terrier Gem is slightly cold-resistant, requiring ample sunlight in winter, keeping the potting soil moderately dry, and can withstand temperatures as low as 0℃. At -5℃, the growing tips of the leaves will suffer frostbite and dry up, and watering should be mostly stopped throughout the winter, with watering gradually reduced below 5 degrees. In the summer, high temperatures cause the entire plant to grow slowly, with some regions halting growth completely. It can be maintained in a ventilated, cool place with restricted watering, avoiding prolonged rain to prevent the plant from rotting. In the spring and autumn, the growth boom periods, the plant should get plenty of sunlight and avoid excessive watering, as too much water can lead to black rot. Repotting should be done once with well-draining, breathable sandy loam soil.
Propagation and Cultivation: The propagation of XiaoYu/Terrier Gem is usually done by cutting the top and inserting it into dry granular soil. After a few days, a small amount of water can be given, and it roots easily. Leaf insertion is also an easy method of propagation, selecting healthy leaves to insert.
Pest Control: In summer, pay attention to root mealybugs and the larvae of small black flies.
Four Key Points for Caring for Succulents: The pot should be shallow, the soil loose, water should be minimal, and the person should be lazy. As long as these four points are grasped, there will be no problem in raising succulents.
