How to care for Rongjin
Below is an introduction to the cultivation of the succulent plant Rongjin, how to care for it, with specific details as follows:
People often use the phrase "a flower that blooms for a moment" to describe the brief lifespan of plant flowers. In fact, many plants have flowers with even shorter lifespans than day lilies, and Rongjin is one of them. Its flowers bloom and close in less than 2 hours. Due to its short blooming period and the fact that it was introduced to China not long ago, it is not very common in cultivation, and few people have seen its flowers.
Rongjin is a succulent plant belonging to the Portulaca family, with irregular rhizomatous roots (commonly known as "tuberous roots") and small branches at the top. The fine branches are covered with scale-like leaves that are green with a hint of white. The flowers are shaped like plum blossoms, growing at the tips of the fine branches, with silk-like petals that are white or red. They usually bloom in the late afternoon when there is plenty of sunshine and close at night. If it is cloudy, rainy, or the cultivation area lacks sunlight, it is difficult for them to bloom. Each flower's lifespan is only 1 to 2 hours, blooming in summer. A single plant blooms for 7 to 10 days. Its unique shape, with its long branches and ancient-looking rhizomatous roots, is reminiscent of some marine organisms that grow on rocks at the bottom of the sea or like dancing silver snakes. Moreover, it is not large, grows slowly, and looks like a living piece of art, making it suitable for planting in small pots and placing in sunny areas or near windowsills. It can be admired leisurely during free time to appreciate the magical charm of plants.
Rongjin is native to the desert areas of South Africa, preferring a cool, dry, and sunny environment. It is drought-resistant, afraid of waterlogging, and also dislikes humid and闷热 conditions. It is slightly cold-tolerant. From the end of September to the following April is its main growing period, during which the fine branches at the top of the rhizome start to sprout and grow. They can be placed in a sunny location for care, with watering following the principle of "no watering when dry, and watering thoroughly when done," avoiding soil waterlogging to prevent tuber rot. As it grows slowly and requires few nutrients, additional fertilization is generally not necessary. During winter, watering should be controlled to withstand temperatures of about 5°C. In summer, ensure good ventilation, avoid rain, and strictly control watering to prevent the soil from becoming闷热 and waterlogged, leading to rot. The potting soil should be loose and well-draining, with some granularity, and can be mixed with one part of decomposed leaf soil or peat, three parts of coarse sand or vermiculite, and a small amount of bone meal or other calcareous materials. It can also be planted using materials like red jade soil. Propagation is done by sowing seeds.
