The cultivation methods for all types of Shou are similar, so there is no need to worry about how to care for a specific type. Most Shou plants prefer warm, dry environments; they are drought-resistant, but long-term water shortage will cause the leaves to shrink; extreme heat will stop growth; direct sunlight can cause leaf burn and brown spots, while excessive shading can cause the leaves to fade, especially the brown-leaf varieties turning green; they have some cold resistance, but below 10°C, growth will stop, and too low temperatures can cause the water-filled leaf cells to freeze and die from frost damage, so winter care should focus on keeping warm.
The growing period for Shou is from spring to early summer, and they can be placed in a bright area without direct sunlight. In the summer, high temperatures can slow down or stop plant growth, so they should be placed in a well-ventilated, cool area to avoid heat and humidity causing the plant to rot, and avoid waterlogging in the soil. When autumn comes, return to normal cultivation management. In winter, move the plants to a warm, bright area and maintain a temperature above 12°C to keep the plants growing. Fertilization can be considered depending on the situation; if temperatures drop below 5°C, be mindful of frost damage. Varieties that easily produce side buds should be repotted every 1-2 years during the growing season.
