A seasoned meat friend with over 6 years of experience in growing succulents asked today: I want to buy nutritious soil to mix with my succulents, why is there such a big price difference online?

The quality of nutritious soil sold online varies greatly, hence the large price difference. Some nutritious soils are made of peat soil mixed with perlite, others are coconut fiber mixed with perlite, and some are decomposed leaf soil mixed with garden soil and perlite. Since peat soil is more expensive, the price of nutritious soil made from it naturally goes up. The nutritious soils made with random combinations are cheaper due to their low cost.
Nutritious Soil
I have been in this hobby for over 6 years, and I have bought countless bags of nutritious soil since I started growing succulents. Some were good and some were bad. Sometimes I bought poor-quality nutritious soil at a high price, and sometimes I got better soil at a low price, but the proportion of poor-quality soil was still higher. What's even more exaggerated is that once I bought nutritious soil that was made from dried pond soil, it contained the bodies of various aquatic insects and even live ones. I was so angry that I threw it away.
Since it's really hard to buy good nutritious soil, and I have a large number of succulents, I later bought a whole bag of imported peat soil to mix my own soil when repotting, after all, peat soil has been verified by countless experts. After opening the bag of peat soil, I was not disappointed. The black-brown peat soil was tightly packed and there were no insects visible. It does harden when dry, but that's a normal phenomenon.
Actually, the succulent granular soil we buy online is made by mixing various granules with peat soil, and the combinations are usually a mix of 5-6 types of granules such as maifanshi (weathered basalt), volcanic rock, coarse river sand, red jade soil, green pumice, and diatomaceous earth, with 3-4 parts peat soil. Once you understand this, there's no need to buy the so-called nutritious soil. You can directly buy granular soil online or buy your own granules and peat soil to mix yourself, which is definitely better than picking through all sorts of nutritious soils.
I hope you will like the detailed introduction above regarding which is better between peat soil and nutritious soil and the optimal proportion of coconut fiber and peat soil.
