Differences between Longyue and Jilongyue

This article provides detailed experience related to the succulent plant Longyue, the differences between Longyue and Jilongyue, and the following is an introduction for you.

Longyue and Jilongyue should be among the easier-to-grow varieties in the Crassulaceae family, very hardy, and can withstand low temperatures in winter. They can naturally overwinter outdoors in the central regions of China. However, some gardening enthusiasts may not be clear about the differences between Longyue and Jilongyue. In fact, there are significant differences upon close examination. Firstly, in terms of color, Longyue's surface is covered with white powder and has a slight purple tinge, while Jilongyue turns red under low temperatures and strong sunlight.

Jilongyue, a smaller variety of Longyue, turns red under low temperatures and strong sunlight as shown in the picture below, and turns green under insufficient sunlight. Its habits are similar to those of Longyue.

Longyue has many branching stems, clustering, cylindrical, with short internodes, fleshy, and bearing aerial roots. Seedling leaves are in a rosette shape; older plants have leaves that clasp the stem, with basal leaves falling off, and the leaves at the top of the branches form a loose rosette. The leaves are thick, ovate, pointed at the tip, fleshy, entire, pinkish-red, covered with white powder, slightly tinged with purple, smooth and glossy, resembling jade. The inflorescence is a corymb, axillary, with white sepals and petals, and red dots on the petals.

Both Longyue and Jilongyue are mainly propagated by cutting, and can also be divided. Leaf cutting is the main method used. The leaves are picked, allowed to lose some water to become slightly wilted, then placed on moist sandy soil, shaded from above. After one month, the leaves will sprout and root at the base of the petiole, and the seedlings can then be transplanted for separate cultivation. Alternatively, the side shoots with roots can be cut off and planted separately.

The planting soil can be a mixture of loam and coarse sand. During the growing period, they need to be placed in the sunlight for cultivation. Watering should not be excessive to avoid rot. In winter, the temperature needs to be maintained above 0°C to ensure safe overwintering. The leaves of the gem flowers resemble jade, clustering at the top of the branches, arranged in a rosette. They are beautiful ornamental leaf plants.
