Mint Cultivation Methods and Precautions
As an ornamental and practical herb, mint is loved for its lush green leaves and refreshing aroma. However, many growers find that achieving a爆发 (explosive) growth of mint is not simple. In fact, by mastering the core cultivation points, one can make the mint branches and leaves flourish and present a waterfall-like growth effect.
I. Creating the Best Growing Environment
1. Control of Light Intensity
Mint is a typical long-day plant, requiring 6-8 hours of adequate sunlight daily. In spring and summer, the potted plants can be placed on a south-facing balcony, while in autumn and winter, it is recommended to use supplementary lights to extend the duration of sunlight. However, it is necessary to avoid strong midday sunlight during the seedling stage, and a shade net can be used to filter 30% of the light intensity.
2. Soil Configuration Scheme
It is recommended to use a mixed matrix of humus soil: perlite: vermiculite = 5:3:2, which can ensure nutrient supply and has good drainage. It is necessary to change the soil every spring, and the old soil can be reused after high-temperature disinfection. Adding a small amount of bone meal can effectively adjust the soil pH to an ideal range of 6.0-7.5.
II. Scientific Implementation of Water and Fertilizer Management
1. Staged Watering Strategy
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the growing period, and water immediately when the topsoil is dry for 1cm. During the high-temperature summer period, adopt the "morning thorough watering + evening misting" mode, and in winter, change to thorough watering every 5-7 days. Start controlled watering 25 days before harvest to increase the mint oil content.
2. Precise Fertilization Scheme
For the base fertilizer, it is recommended to use a mixture of decomposed sheep manure and slow-release fertilizer at a ratio of 3:1, adding 10g per liter of soil. During the growing period, apply a diluted nitrogenous liquid fertilizer every 15 days, and switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers during the budding period. Spraying EM bacteria solution on the leaves can enhance resistance and make the leaves thick and glossy.
III. Advanced Cultivation Techniques
1. Pruning to Promote New Branches
When the main stem reaches 20cm, pinch the top and leave 4-6 true leaves. When the lateral branches exceed 15cm, prune them again to continuously stimulate the germination of new buds. Regularly remove the bottom aging leaves to improve the ventilation conditions of the plant.
2. Pest and Disease Control
Red spiders can be controlled with a neem oil diluent, and aphids can be killed by spraying a chili garlic water. Use carbendazim to water the roots monthly to prevent root rot, and maintaining good ventilation can reduce the occurrence of powdery mildew.
By precisely controlling growth factors such as light and water and fertilizer, and combined with scientific pruning management, your mint potted plant will achieve an explosive effect within 3 months. Remember to regularly harvest the top tender leaves, which can not only promote branching growth but also be used to make refreshing drinks, enjoying the double pleasure of planting and harvesting.
