Narcissus Sculpture and Maintenance Methods

Provide you with a comprehensive explanation of the knowledge of making bonsai Narcissus, including Narcissus sculpture and maintenance methods, as follows:

Narcissus is one of the top ten famous flowers in China. During the New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, there is a tradition of sculpting Narcissus in folk, bending the flower stems of Narcissus into various artistic effects. After the sculpture is completed, careful maintenance is required to ensure the normal blooming of Narcissus during the festival.

Before sculpting, the outer skin of the purchased Narcissus bulbs should be peeled off, the protective soil and withered roots at the bottom removed, and then the upper 3-4 layers of the bulb epidermis should be peeled off with a small knife to expose the flower buds, taking care not to damage the flower buds during peeling. Then, soak the bulbs in clear water overnight, wipe off the sticky liquid oozing from the incision the next day, and place them upright in a shallow Narcissus pot, adding water to cover 1/3 of the bulbs. Quartz sand or cobblestones can be used in the pot to secure the bulbs.

During the day, the Narcissus pot should be placed in a sunny location, moved indoors at night, and the water in the pot should be drained to control the excessive growth of leaves. In the morning, add fresh water again, taking care not to change the direction of the bulbs. When first potted, Narcissus can be watered once a day, then every 2-3 days, and after the flower buds form, water should be changed once a week. Narcissus grows well in a temperature range of 10-15°C, and it takes about 45 days to bloom, with the blooming period lasting over a month.

During the hydroponic period of Narcissus, it is especially important to provide ample lighting, placing it in a sunlit area during the day and under lights at night. This can prevent the stems and leaves of Narcissus from growing excessively, resulting in short, wide, thick, and robust leaves, dark green in color, and fragrant flowers. Generally, no fertilizer is needed for hydroponic Narcissus, but if conditions permit, a small amount of fast-acting phosphorus fertilizer can be applied during the blooming period to enhance flowering.
