Scutellaria baicalensis, a perennial herb, with stems creeping at the base and ascending, 30-120 cm tall (15 cm). Flowers are borne on one side of the inflorescence; corolla is labiate, blue-purple in color. Small nutlets are nearly spherical, black-brown, enclosed in the persistent calyx. Flowering period is from July to October, fruiting period is from August to October. It prefers warm conditions, is cold-resistant, and unsuitable for planting in poorly drained soil. The soil should be loamy or sandy loam, with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and avoids continuous cropping. May to June is the period for stem and leaf growth, October is when the aerial parts wither, and it starts to regrow in April of the following year.
