Ranunculus germination method
Share with everyone the introduction and related experience of growing Ranunculus flowers. Next, the editor will introduce to netizens.
If we talk about flowers whose names seriously delay their appreciation, Ranunculus can definitely rank first. It's because the name of Ranunculus sounds so common and unglamorous that many people overlook its beauty. Ranunculus flowers are very similar to peonies and are also known as "foreign peonies".
Ranunculus Introduction
Ranunculus is a perennial herb of the Ranunculus family, Ranunculus genus. It is also known as "celery flower" because its leaves resemble celery. It is native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia. Ranunculus flowers come in a variety of colors, with a peony-like shape, mostly double or semi-double. The natural blooming period of Ranunculus is from April to May in spring. The plant is small and very suitable for potting and can also be used as a cut flower, making it a common ornamental pot plant and fresh cut flower material.
Ranunculus is a perennial herbaceous flower that prefers a cool environment, is fond of light but not tolerant of strong sunlight, has small underground rhizomes that look like claws, and is therefore also known as "claw". Propagation is mostly done by division and seeding. Ranunculus is very beautiful, so how should it be cared for?
For home planting of Ranunculus, it is recommended to buy small rhizomes (the "claws" of Ranunculus) to plant, as they bloom early and are easy to manage. Seeding will have a longer care period. The planting time for Ranunculus claws depends on the temperature. In most regions, planting can be done from the end of September to the beginning of November. In southern regions, planting should be postponed until the temperature remains below 30 degrees. In northern regions, if planting indoors, it can be planted earlier. If planting outdoors, it is recommended to plant in early spring, otherwise the winter cold may damage the plants.
Before planting, there is a very important operation for germination of Ranunculus claws. Germinating before planting can greatly improve the survival rate. Here is how to germinate Ranunculus, which you can refer to.
Ranunculus Germination Method
Ranunculus claws are dormant in summer and usually look shriveled when received by flower enthusiasts. Don't worry. Before planting, soak the claws in clean water or a carbendazim solution for about 30 minutes to allow them to absorb enough water and become plump, then take them out and dry the excess moisture.
While soaking the Ranunculus claws, you can prepare some pure vermiculite or pure perlite, wet them with water, and then drain the excess water. If you don't have vermiculite or perlite, you can also use river sand or a slightly moist mixture of peat soil and water as a substitute for germination.
Ranunculus Germination Method
Use a disposable lunch box, put a layer of prepared perlite at the bottom, then place the soaked Ranunculus claws on it, making sure not to place them upside down, with the bald end up and the pointed end down. Then cover with a layer of perlite, covering about 2/3 of the claws, and place it in the refrigerator's保鲜 layer to germinate.
Usually, you can see the Ranunculus claws germinate in about 7 days. During the waiting period, if the perlite becomes very dry, spray some water to replenish moisture, but do not let the bottom of the box accumulate water.
After the Ranunculus claws have germinated, they can be transplanted into pots.
How to Care for Ranunculus After Germination
After the Ranunculus claws have germinated, they can be transplanted and planted. Generally, a pot of about 15cm can plant 1-2 plants, and a pot of about 20cm can plant 3 plants.
1. Potting Soil
Ranunculus prefers well-draining sandy soil. The claws will rot in a water-logged environment. When potting, use loose and breathable soil. You can use universal nutrient soil mixed with 1/5 of particle soil. When planting, you can add some decomposed organic fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer and bone meal as base fertilizer.
Planting does not need to be too deep, just covering the Ranunculus claws completely. After planting, water thoroughly and then place in a shady and well-ventilated area to wait for the seedlings to break through the soil. Before the seedlings break through the soil, do not water again. After the leaves have grown, water normally.
2. Fertilization and Water Management
Watering in daily maintenance should be thorough, watering when the top 2cm of soil is dry. In the early stage, mainly the leaves are growing, and the fertilizer used is mainly general growth fertilizer, such as "Flower More 1", general water-soluble fertilizer, or compound fertilizer. It is recommended to apply fertilizer every 7 days or so.
When Ranunculus starts to bolt, it indicates that it is about to bloom. At this time, it should be changed to phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote flowering, maintaining an application of "Flower More 2" or monopotassium phosphate fertilizer every 25-7 days.
3. Light and Temperature Control
Ranunculus is a flower that likes light but not strong light. In autumn and early spring, it can maintain sufficient light to make the plant grow矮. By spring, as the light intensity increases, the light should be appropriately reduced, or the plant can be placed in a bright area with scattered light for maintenance.
Ranunculus prefers a cool climate and can tolerate low temperatures of -5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, in areas above -5 degrees, it can overwinter outdoors. In colder regions, it is recommended to bring the plant indoors to overwinter, keeping the temperature above 5 degrees. Ranunculus can bloom earlier.
4. Oversummering Method
After flowering in spring, the above-ground part of Ranunculus will gradually wither and enter a dormant period. Therefore, after the flowers fade in spring, you can first cut off the残花, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote the expansion of the underground claws, wait for the nutrients of the branches and leaves to flow back into the claws, and after the above-ground part withers, dig out the claws, place them in a shady and well-ventilated place to dry, then hang them in a mesh bag for ventilation storage. Wait until autumn to germinate and plant again.
