Certain varieties of clematis are cold-tolerant, able to withstand short periods of temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees. The optimal temperature is between 21 to 25 degrees during the day and 15 to 17 degrees at night. The overwintering temperature for clematis is around 5 degrees. If the ambient temperature drops below 5 degrees, it will enter a dormant state. If potted and grown indoors, it can still grow normally with a temperature of over 10 degrees.
Clematis is also known as iron wire peony, Chinese lantern, golden silver wrap, mountain thoroughwax, Chinese lantern, and Weiling Xian. It is distributed in China and Japan and is a climber plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It prefers a warm growing environment and has a certain level of cold tolerance, being able to withstand freezing during winter.

1. Growth Temperature
The optimal growth temperature for clematis is between 21 to 25 degrees during the day and 15 to 17 degrees at night. In summer, when temperatures exceed 35 degrees, it can cause leaf yellowing and leaf drop, requiring measures to lower the temperature.
2. Overwintering Temperature
The overwintering temperature for clematis is around 5 degrees. If the ambient temperature is below 5 degrees, it will enter a dormant state to adapt to the winter environment. If potted and grown indoors, it can still grow normally with a temperature of over 10 degrees.
3. Minimum Cold Tolerance Temperature
Some varieties of clematis are cold-tolerant and can withstand short periods of minus 20 degrees. In most regions of China, it can overwinter outdoors, but in the very cold northern regions, measures need to be taken to keep it warm.
Clematis Overwintering Care
1. Sufficient Light: During the winter growing period, clematis still needs to grow in a well-lit environment. Long-term lack of light is not conducive to its overwintering. It can be placed in a sunny location without worrying about sunburn.
2. Water Control: After entering winter, clematis will enter a dormant state and requires no watering in low temperatures. If kept in a greenhouse, it can be watered slightly to maintain normal growth.
3. Proper Pruning: After entering the dormant state, clematis can be pruned extensively, mainly removing dead, diseased, vigorous, and overly dense branches. It is a plant with strong growth ability and very tolerant to pruning, which can be shaped through pruning.
