It is a traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying, with the effects of detoxifying, benefiting the throat, clearing heat and phlegm, and dissipating heat to resolve masses.

A perennial herbaceous plant, 30-60 cm tall. The aerial stem is erect, cylindrical, and purplish-red, with a fleshy rhizome. The leaflets are usually entire, with a green surface and a powdery underside, with distinct veins on both sides; the petiole is about 10 cm long, resembling angelica.
