The legend of Gentiana

It is said that there was a poor child named Zeng Tong who spent his days herding cows for a wealthy landowner. After finding a snake's gallbladder and returning it to the snake spirit, Zeng Tong became the adopted son of the snake mother. The snake mother gave Zeng Tong a needle and a small empty bottle filled with medicine powder, then transformed into a large snake. Zeng Tong climbed into the snake's mouth, reached the gallbladder, pierced it with the needle, collected a few drops of gallbladder juice, and then crawled out. Before parting, the snake mother told Zeng Tong, "If you have any difficulties in the future, just look for your mother. As long as you climb up thirty-three cliff steps and knock three times, your mother will come to open the door."

Zeng Tong went to the capital,揭了皇榜 (which seems to be a typo and might mean "won the imperial exam" or "took the imperial examination"), and cured the prince's illness with snake gallbladder juice. He became the prince's companion and was granted the name Zeng Xiang, saying that he would be appointed as the prime minister when the prince ascends the throne. A year later, the emperor's princess also fell ill with the same disease as the prince. The emperor summoned Zeng Xiang and said, "If you can cure the princess, I will make you my son-in-law."

Zeng Tong thought of the snake mother's instructions before parting and went to find her. The snake mother knew Zeng Xiang's intention and gave him another needle and an empty bottle, instructing him, "When you go into the belly to collect the gallbladder juice this time, you can only pierce once. Don't be greedy!"

Zeng Xiang pierced once, collected the gallbladder juice, but then thought: This juice is so effective, I might as well take more. Mother, don't be stingy, let me take more! With this thought, he raised his hand and pierced several times in a row. The large snake, in pain, closed its mouth, shrank its belly, rolled a few times, and then fainted. Zeng Xiang also suffocated to death.

The snake mother, feeling disgusted upon waking up, vomited massively. The vomit landed on the grass and turned into "snake gallbladder grass."

The snake mother blamed Zeng Xiang for his greed but pitied the seriously ill princess, so she transformed into an old woman, picked the snake gallbladder grass, and went to the golden palace, claiming that Zeng Xiang had died suddenly and that she was taking her son's place to treat the illness, gaining the trust of the emperor. The snake mother let the princess take the snake gallbladder grass, and the princess's illness was cured.

Overjoyed, the emperor asked about the name of the herb. Not hearing the name "snake gallbladder grass" clearly, the emperor said, "Gentiana is good, Gentiana is good!" Since the emperor's word is "golden," "snake gallbladder grass" became "Gentiana." Later, someone built a "snake god temple" on the top of a large ocean mountain, with a couplet inscribed on it: "With a peaceful heart, return the pearl to the snake god as a mother; with a greedy heart, pierce the gallbladder and the snake mother swallows the son."
