The cactaceae ball, young plants are spherical, old plants are cylindrical, with a sunken top; the main caudex base produces seed balls. The body is dark green, with high ridges and regular wavy edges. Flowers grow on the side of the ball, large trumpet-shaped, white (or yellow), fragrant; blooms in summer. Opens after dusk and wilts by the next morning. Single flowers usually bloom for 36 hours. It is a popular indoor potted plant and also a good rootstock for grafting cactaceae spherical varieties.
