Shitong, a small, erect-rooted species, has a flat, spherical plant body similar to a small version of the Astrophytum genus. It is soft and juicy, greenish-brown in color, with low, flat ridges. The spines are initially red and then turn black. It is a summer-flowering species with yellow flowers, short petals, and covered with brown single hairs. It is self-fertile, and the fruit is juicy with thick walls. It is cultivated in loose sandy soil.
