How to Cultivate Cacti
A guide to share some knowledge and tips on how to cultivate cacti and the key techniques for growing these green plants. Let's take a look together.
Cacti are drought-resistant plants, and the planting process is simple. With careful maintenance after planting, they can grow healthily.
Ⅰ. Methods for Planting Cacti
1. Soil
Cacti should be planted in a loose, fertile sandy soil with good drainage and aeration. A mixture of sandstone soil, perlite, decomposed leaf soil, and vermiculite in a ratio of 2:2:2:3 is recommended to ensure the soil is rich in nutrients, meeting the plant's growth needs.
2. Pot
Cacti require a pot with good aeration that is not too large. Terra cotta pots and clay pots are both suitable.
3. Planting Process
Select plump cactus seeds and plant them in the prepared potting soil, water slightly, and keep the soil moist. Place them in a shady and well-ventilated area to grow, waiting for them to take root and sprout.
Ⅱ. Methods for Growing Cacti
1. Temperature
Cacti grow well in temperatures between 16-22 degrees Celsius. They can tolerate temperatures as high as 35 degrees Celsius in summer, but will get sunburned above 35 degrees. In winter, the temperature should not drop below 5 degrees Celsius, with proper measures for insulation and warmth.
2. Light
Cacti require ample light for growth, and this should be ensured throughout the year. During the growing season, provide 8 hours of sunlight daily. In summer, when sunlight is strong, they need to be shaded. In winter, place them outdoors at noon for sunlight.
3. Watering
Cacti are drought-resistant plants, and the watering principle during the growing season is to water when the soil is slightly dry. Water promptly when the soil is slightly dry, and no need to water when it's moist. In summer and winter, when the plant enters a semi-dormant or dormant period, reduce watering or stop watering according to the plant's growth.
4. Fertilizing
During the growing season, use a mature fertilizer or a diluted nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer once a month. Before entering the dormant period in winter, use phosphorus fertilizer once, and stop fertilizing in winter.
