How to Repot a Football Cactus
The football cactus, a unique variety among succulents, is loved by gardening enthusiasts for its bulbous stem and sharp spines. Regular repotting not only promotes healthy root growth but also provides a better growing environment for the plant. This article will analyze the entire process and key technical points of repotting a football cactus from a scientific care perspective.
Four Key Steps for Repotting a Football Cactus
Plant Removal and Root Treatment
Before repotting, reduce watering for 3-5 days to dry the soil. Tilt the pot and tap the sides to loosen the soil, using a gardening spade to ensure the entire root ball is removed. When encountering compacted soil, use a bamboo skewer to assist in cleaning, focusing on protecting the capillary roots with a diameter less than 2mm, which are the main channels for the plant's absorption (S-Y) division.
Scientific Root Pruning
Disinfect the pruning shears with alcohol before pruning, focusing on three types of roots: ① completely dried brown roots, ②腐烂 roots with water stains, ③ tangled roots. Keep the main root length between 8-10cm and apply sulfur powder or charcoal ash to the cut ends for disinfection.
Pot and Substrate Selection
It is recommended to use a ceramic pot 3-5cm larger in diameter than the original pot, with at least three drainage holes at the bottom. The substrate should be mixed in a 4:3:3 ratio of akadama soil (water retaining), pumice (breathable), and leaf mold (nutritious), and 5% bone meal can be added to enhance calcium content.
Scientific Planting and Soil Filling
First, lay down a 2cm thick layer of ceramsite as a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. Place the plant in the center of the pot, maintaining its original growth depth. Use a layered compacting method when filling the soil, lifting the plant slightly after every 3cm of substrate is added to help the roots spread. Finally, apply a 0.5cm layer of diatomaceous earth on the surface to prevent pests.
Post-Repotting Care Tips
After planting, keep the plant in a shady and well-ventilated area for 7-10 days, and do not water during this period. Once new roots have developed (which can be judged by gently touching the plant to feel its grip on the soil), gradually increase scattered light. For the first watering, use the immersion method, with the water level not exceeding one-third of the pot height, and soak for 20 minutes to ensure even water absorption.
Mastering the correct timing and method for repotting can keep the football cactus vibrant. It is recommended to repot every 2-3 years in spring, and regularly turning the pot (rotating 90° monthly) can prevent the plant from growing lopsided. Through scientific care, the bulb diameter of the football cactus can increase by 1-1.5cm annually, showcasing a more spectacular ornamental effect.
