Sedum propagation method

An article about green plant knowledge, introducing the topic of Sedum plants, the propagation method of Sedum, let's learn about it together.

As the saying goes, to raise Sedum, it is essential to propagate, but some gardening friends do not know the propagation method of Sedum. There are mainly two reasons for propagating Sedum: First, compared to other cacti, this plant has a relatively short lifespan, averaging only a few years in the wild (due to factors like animal grazing, decay, and drought), and can extend to about 50 years under domestic cultivation (provided there is no division or conglutination), so it is necessary to plan for successors to continuously plant. Second, due to its miniature size, raising a group of small Sedum plants together can result in unexpectedly adorable effects!

Sedum propagation timing: The best time to propagate is when the Sedum seeds are mature, which is usually around July to August in the summer. Sedum seeds are best sown immediately after harvesting, as their shelf life is shorter than that of other genera. The germination rate is almost 95% within half a year, and it will drop to 50%-80% after a year, and almost cannot germinate well after two years. Therefore, I strongly recommend against buying foreign Sedum seeds, as it can be a disappointment.

Propagation medium: I have tried many combinations, and as long as it is loose and does not accumulate water, it is fine! For the medium, I don't think it needs to be very demanding. Those with money can add pumice, red jade, planting stone, etc., making it more pleasing to the eye, more granular, and less prone to moss. Those without money can choose other materials as substitutes, which may require a bit more effort in management, but it is not a problem.

Ultimately, considering various factors, I chose a combination of large-particle vermiculite, rice husk carbon, and coal ash in a ratio of about 5:3:2. Mix them evenly when dry, then add a little tap water, microwave on high for 10 minutes, and let it cool with the lid open. (The tip here is not to add too much water, so the temperature rises higher, and by the time it cools down, the water has almost evaporated!)

Propagation container: Without a greenhouse, I recommend using an oil壶 for home cultivation.

Propagation method: Fill the oil壶 with slightly moist mixed soil, not too much, 3-4 cm deep is enough, as the seedlings will be transplanted after half a year and the roots of Sedum won't be very thick or long in the early stages. After filling, cover the top with a thin layer of large-particle vermiculite. If conditions are limited, you can soak the oil壶 in potassium permanganate solution (which also promotes germination), then evenly scatter the seeds by hand, and I recommend dense sowing! If conditions allow, you can soak the oil壶 in a germination hormone solution, then sow, and spray the excess hormone solution on top.

After that, cover the upper part and the lid of the oil壶 and place it in a relatively bright location (I put it in a glass cabinet on the east side with a layer of glass), and it is better if there is a ventilated environment. Fresh seeds will start to germinate within 24-48 hours, and they can all sprout within a week.

After a week, remove the oil壶 lid, and you can ignore it. Since Sedum seedlings are not afraid of high temperatures (20-40°C is fine), it's best to propagate when it's a bit warmer. At this time, with sufficient sunlight and high temperatures, there is no need to use fungicides like carbendazim.
