Selection and Differences of the Succulent Plant Wumu
This article introduces the topic of succulent plant Wumu, including its selection and differences. Corrections are welcome if there are any mistakes!
Wumu plants are currently quite expensive, and many plant enthusiasts don't know much about them. This article will discuss Wumu in detail, with a large number of images to help enthusiasts understand the selection and differences of Wumu.
I. Wumu Features
Wumu should have at least four characteristics: three external features - jade base, black edges (sometimes purple-red edges), granular patterns; and one internal feature - dominance.
Jade Base: This doesn't mean it has to be jade-colored, but rather not a dull green or foolish green, but a feeling of clarity and luster like jade. Mainly referring to the inner divine quality of jade.
Black Edges: A typical feature of Wumu, personally, the darker the black edges, the better, the larger the range, the clearer the division between black and jade, and the higher the consistency of black edges on each leaf, the better. Of course, there are also purple-red edges, depending on personal preference.
Granular Patterns: This refers to the pattern of Wumu that looks like sugar granules stacked in a crystal-like formation, making the pattern clear and translucent, regardless of size or time, this feature is always very obvious. Spring, summer, and autumn are the same. As for winter, I haven't seen it. But from some photos, it seems to have this feature.
Domination: In the Sedum family, Wumu has become a dominant succulent, and its price is not low abroad. The beauty of Wumu is different from the "cute" beauty of ordinary Sedums, but rather it embodies an inner strength, grandeur, and open-mindedness, showing a dignified and straightforward dominance, which is the combination of traditional Chinese royal and霸道 paths. This dominance is reflected not only in the above three features but also in the large and thick feeling of Wumu leaves. The thicker the leaves, the heavier the dominance, and some thin leaves may not show enough dominance.
The following are all Wumu:
Showing a dominant beauty, with the advantage of edges as red as blood and consistent edge colors on each leaf, reflecting purity and a top-notch base color. The drawback is that the leaves are thin, and this photo is taken with backlighting, which is too artistic. If buying, it's better to look at a natural photo.
A natural photo with thick purple-red edges, showing a霸道 beauty, the drawback is that the royal aura is slightly weak, but it is still a top-grade plant. If it grows twice as large, it will be even better.
Good base color, black enough edges, with a precious look in the royal path, but slightly lacking in dominance. If it grows larger, it will make up for it.
Big and dominant, leaves thick, color like green jade, not lacking in jade蕴, those who can't tell can compare it with the temptation type. The granular pattern is extremely obvious, like green crystal blocks. The drawback is that the black edge is too weak. It depends on the cultivation skills.
This is my favorite plant. No more to say, just note that the photo was taken after spraying water, which will change some colors.
II. Wumu Miscellaneous
Nowadays, it seems that as long as a Sedum is related to Wumu, it gets a royal aura and its value increases. But it's not really like that.
First, the real Wumu hybrids must have obvious Wumu features, and not just anything can be called a Wumu hybrid.
Second, the inner dominant beauty of Wumu is only fully reflected in pure Wumu, while the hybrid plants may have another kind of beauty, but most of them lose the inner dominant beauty. Especially as the plant grows larger, the hybrid characteristics become more apparent.
The following photos are all Wumu hybrids:
Too green base color, hybrid of temptation.
The red edges are powdery, Wumu doesn't have this color of edges.
The core of Wumu will not become a cabbage, and the leaves are too thin, not like Wumu. Imagine, how can a very thin person show dominance?
Wumu leaves won't be crooked, and the base color is dark, this plant doesn't show an obvious granular pattern. The price of this plant is also very cheap.
III. Wumu Selection and Purchase
The price of Wumu is relatively high, but except for a few mature plants, it hasn't reached an exorbitant level. Most enthusiasts can afford one. The key is to learn how to select.
First, purity. When I select Wumu, I put purity first, mainly following the three standards mentioned above. As for the dominance standard, it mainly depends on the cultivation skills.
Second, appearance. Not all Wumu are the same; there are significant differences between them. Some have red edges, some have black edges; some have thick leaves, some have thin leaves; some have wide leaves, some have narrow leaves; some have large black edges, some have small black edges; there are large, medium, and small varieties. Moreover, the base color and edge purity also differ. When selecting the appearance, if the new leaves are green, look at the old leaves, as the black edges of the old leaves generally don't change; if the old leaves are green, look at the new leaves. The green of the old leaves might be due to the growth environment at the time. If the environment is good, the new leaves will also have obvious black edges, even in summer. If both the new and old leaves are green, it's better for the seller to cultivate it to a good state before selling it.
Third, size. I think medium and small plants are suitable. Too small, the leaf shape and color haven't stabilized, making it difficult to judge its future development; mature plants are too expensive, cost-ineffective, and there's no fun in watching it grow. So I prefer medium and small plants, usually around 7-10 cm, like teenagers, already basically shaped, and there won't be much change in the future.
Fourth, timing. The best time is early winter and late spring, which is the best period for Wumu to color, allowing you to see its best state. Don't worry about whether you can maintain this state, that's not what you should consider when buying. When buying, consider the best state it can reach. So I suggest buying when it's in the best state. Of course, if the seller's skill level is low and you have a good eye, you can also pick a top-quality Wumu without a state.
The following photos are for reference: the last one is too small and not recommended to buy that large.
Some notes on selection:
1. Don't believe in things like orange Wumu, red Wumu, or pink Wumu, they are all scams. Remember, soy sauce is not oil. Classic Wumu must meet the above features.
2. Don't act impulsively. If you have money in hand, you won't worry about not being able to buy anything. But if you have something and want to change it back, it's difficult.
3. The definition of a dishonest merchant: passing off inferior goods as good, selling counterfeits, selling goods that don't match the description, not disclosing diseases, and selling new names at high prices, etc. A high price doesn't necessarily mean a dishonest merchant, as long as the goods are genuine, the price is a matter of Zhou Yu hitting Huang Gai. As long as it's not done through deception, it doesn't fall under the category of a dishonest merchant.
