The Maintenance Experience of Xiongtongzi Baijin

Let's talk about the experience of growing the succulent plant Xiongtongzi Baijin. Keep reading for the maintenance experience of Xiongtongzi Baijin!

Xiongtongzi Baijin (cotyledon ladismithiensis variegata) belongs to the Crassulaceae family, the silver wave锦 genus, and is native to Namibia in Africa. Xiongtongzi Baijin is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant with a dwarf, branching shrub-like appearance. The old stems are dark brown, the young branches are gray, and the thick, fleshy leaves are opposite. The leaves are ovate, 2-3 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide, with notched edges on the top. The leaf surface is densely covered with white fine short villi, and the leaf tips have several small claws that turn red under strong sunlight, resembling fat bear claws. Xiongtongzi Baijin has a racemose inflorescence with slightly red flowers.

Xiongtongzi Baijin should be maintained in a warm, dry environment with plenty of sunlight. It is kept in a sunroom. When the temperature exceeds 35℃ in summer, the entire plant's growth basically stops. During this time, watering should be reduced and the plant should be shaded to prevent root rot due to excessively moist potting soil. It is also important to improve ventilation and avoid direct exposure to the scorching sun. This is the basic maintenance throughout the summer. It is worth mentioning that during summer, the plant is not completely deprived of water; only a small amount of water is given, about twice a month, around 7 pm, when the sun has already set, thus not affecting the plant's roots.

In other seasons, the plant should receive full sunlight, and water should be given when the soil is completely dry. In winter, watering should be strictly controlled to keep the potting soil dry, and it can tolerate temperatures as low as -2℃.

In cultivation, Xiongtongzi Baijin should be protected from prolonged rain. Although the plant is often sprayed with water to remove dust and keep the leaves clean, care should be taken not to let water stay in the leaf heart for long, as it may lead to rot.

Xiongtongzi Baijin grows slowly and can be repotted every 2-4 years. This is usually done before the first watering in early spring. The soil mixture used includes peat, pumice, and coal slag, with a roughly 1:1:1 ratio, as long as the soil is well-aerated. Xiongtongzi Baijin has a compact shape with many branches, which can be cut for side branch propagation or leaf propagation, the latter being a bit more challenging. The leaves are placed on slightly moist soil in a cool, well-ventilated area and left alone. New leaves will gradually grow, and watering can be resumed once roots have formed.

Branch propagation is even simpler. Healthy branches with dried wounds can be inserted into slightly moist sandy soil. In a cool, well-ventilated area, roots will generally form in 15 to 20 days. Propagation by cuttings should be done in spring and autumn, while leaf propagation can be done at any time except winter.
