Blossfeldia liliputiana - Cactaceae Truffle Cactus Genus, native to the mountains of South America at altitudes of 1200-3600 meters, usually hiding in rock crevices, spherical diameter about 1.2 cm, rarely exceeding 2 cm, it takes 2-5 years from seed to flowering.
The Truffle Cactus is not only one of the most distinctive species in the South American cactus series but may also be the most unique plant in the Cactaceae family. In addition to holding a Guinness World Record for the smallest cactus plant, what is more important is that it has a special physiological function. Based on the different water conditions for terrestrial plants, they are divided into two major categories: water-changing plants and constant-water plants. Water-changing plants do not have good protective tissues; the moisture in their bodies is entirely influenced by the external environment. When the environment is dry, the moisture in these plants rapidly evaporates, causing the entire plant to dry out and enter a dormant state. These plants, which can highly tolerate dehydration, can quickly resume active life when they obtain water (such as rain, dew, water vapor, etc.). Water-changing plants mainly include some lower plants, such as lichens and mosses, but among vascular plants, drought-resistant water-changing plants are rare, and the Truffle Cactus is a rare example among higher plants. The Truffle Cactus has special physiological characteristics: it has the lowest density of stomata on the surface of green plants, almost to the point of being non-existent; it can withstand severe wilting and restore its appearance through soaking in water after losing more than 80% of its moisture; its roots basically have no absorption capacity, mainly engaging in direct exchange of air, water, nutrients, and other substances through the body surface.
