Cyclamen flowering period care

About the cyclamen flowering period care and cyclamen flowering cultivation skills, the following is a comprehensive introduction.

The name "cyclamen" sounds suitable for the Chinese New Year atmosphere. Therefore, many friends buy one or two pots to place at home during the New Year. Its flowers are also quite special, beautiful and bright, with many colors, and the flowering period is relatively long, coinciding with the Chinese Spring Festival. If well taken care of, its flowers can bloom from the Spring Festival to the end of April. Thus, it is loved by many friends, especially during the New Year when the flower market also experiences high sales.

Most of the cyclamen purchased in the flower market before the New Year are in the flowering period (you wouldn't buy them if they hadn't entered the flowering period). The flowering period requires the roots to absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil in time. To avoid affecting its normal flowering during the New Year, it is best not to disturb the original flower soil. If you find the original pot unattractive, you can choose a pot cover or change the pot without disturbing the original soil.

After the flowering period, as the weather warms up, cyclamen enters dormancy, and its leaves will gradually wither and age, losing their ornamental value. The cyclamen bulb is difficult to preserve, which is why we have to buy new cyclamen every year.

Cyclamen is native to Greece, Syria, Lebanon, and other places; also known as rabbit ear flowers, radish begonias, etc., it is a perennial herbaceous plant.

It prefers a relatively cool environment, with its flowering period generally from December to the following May, lasting up to half a year.

To care for cyclamen well, the following issues should be noted:

1. The planting soil for cyclamen, due to its egg-like bulbous root, requires good drainage and loose breathability. If the soil accumulates water, it can cause the bulb to rot, and the entire plant will be ruined. The soil can be mixed with more granular materials to aid drainage, such as coarse river sand. I usually choose to mix leaf mold and coarse sand, with coarse sand accounting for 60%. This ensures the soil's drainage, though it may be less nutritious. However, that's fine; we can increase the amount of fertilizer in the later stages.

2. Cyclamen is a rather peculiar plant, with a large bulbous root that has a strong ability to store water and nutrients. One would expect it to be drought-resistant, but it defies logic. It is afraid of dryness, and its leaves wilt when the soil dries. With a bulbous root and the need for ample water, it goes back to the first point: the soil drainage must be good, it should be watered frequently, but the pot soil should not accumulate water. Maintaining the soil in a moist state throughout the care process ensures that it does not wilt or turn yellow.

3. The humidity requirement during the care process of cyclamen is relatively high, especially in the dry northern indoor environment with heating. It is necessary to frequently spray water on the leaves and around it to increase the humidity, thereby ensuring its normal growth and flowering and extending the flowering period.

4. Cyclamen prefers an environment with scattered light, so during the New Year period, it can be placed in a relatively bright indoor area. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, as direct sunlight and strong lighting can lead to shorter flower stems, wilted leaves, and even yellowing and falling.

5. Cyclamen does not like high temperatures, with 15°C-20°C being the best growth environment. The temperature must be controlled properly. If it is too high, it can cause the plant to elongate, yellow, and drop flowers, ending the flowering period prematurely and entering a dormant state. Temperatures below -2°C can directly freeze it to death.

6. If you don't want to buy cyclamen again next year, how should you handle it after flowering? Actually, there is no need to do much; just maintain the status quo. Once all the leaves have withered, cut off the dead leaves, do not dig it out, and keep the pot soil slightly moist. Place it in a shady and well-ventilated area, and after a while, water it slightly to maintain the soil's moisture.

When cyclamen starts to germinate in September or October and enters normal growth, fertilize once every two weeks with a multi-element compound fertilizer. Starting from November, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in advance to prepare for flowering. Then, just follow the previous instructions for care, and by next Spring Festival, you will have another beautiful cyclamen.
