Cyclamen, also known as Begonia, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the root flowering family. The flowers come in various colors such as red, white, and purple. The flowering period lasts up to 6 months, peaking during the Spring Festival, which makes it very popular. Cyclamen is generally sown in autumn and takes about 12 to 14 months to bloom. Using the following techniques can shorten the cultivation cycle and promote earlier flowering.
1. Select high-quality seeds and treat them. Choose plump and glossy brown seeds, soak them in water at about 30℃ for 3 to 4 hours, then plant them, which can make the seeds bloom about 10 days earlier than untreated ones.
2. Water appropriately. Cyclamen is a plant that prefers moisture but is afraid of waterlogging. Excessive water is not good for its growth and can even cause root rot and death. Therefore, it is sufficient to keep the soil moist every day, and the amount of water should not be too much.
3. Apply more fertilizer. Cyclamen also likes fertilizer. First, start with the soil. Use fertile sandy loam soil with more humus in the flowerpot, change the potting soil once a year, and apply 2% phosphorus acid hydrogen potassium once each in spring and autumn every year. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can promote flowering 15 to 20 days earlier.
4. Create suitable temperature conditions. Cyclamen is not heat-resistant. High temperatures can make it enter a dormant state. Therefore, temperature greatly affects cyclamen. Generally, it is suitable for cyclamen to grow in an environment with a temperature of about 20℃ during the day and 10℃ at night, and the temperature can be slightly lower during the seedling stage. Additionally, slightly lower temperatures during flower bud differentiation and pedicle elongation are beneficial for flowering. In summer, cyclamen enters a dormant stage due to high temperatures. If low temperatures are created, it can avoid dormancy and is beneficial for flowering.
5. Extend lighting conditions. Cyclamen enjoys sunlight. Extending the duration of sunlight can promote earlier flowering, so cyclamen should be placed in a sunny location for maintenance. 6. Hormone treatment. When the young buds of cyclamen appear, spray 1 mg/kg of gibberellin gently on the young buds, once to three times a day, which can promote flowering more than 15 days earlier.
