How to propagate gardenias in water culture

Are you curious about how to propagate gardenias in water culture and master the green plant care tips for gardenias? Let's learn about it together.

Key point: It is clear that gardenias can be propagated in water, but usually only for cutting and rooting in water culture. If maintained for a full cycle, the growth is very poor. Of course, it's not a problem to care for a branch or two flower buds, but it's difficult to achieve a sealed pot in water culture.

Every year when gardenias bloom, our office goes to the base to pick some fully bloomed gardenias and put them in bottles. We enjoy the fragrance of gardenias. Since we are involved in greening work and love plants, through careful observation, we have found many special phenomena, which should be typical of gardenias in water culture.

Inserting unopened gardenias with only flower buds into bottles for care, after the flower buds bloom and fade, we find that the gardenias have developed many fibrous roots. When fully bloomed gardenias are inserted into bottles for care, the fibrous roots that emerge are more numerous and dense. This can be attributed to the fact that fully bloomed gardenias do not consume as much energy as branches with only flower buds, thus they root quickly and densely.

Based on the examples I shared above, it can be confirmed that gardenias can be propagated in water culture, and it is easy to root. When we find that the roots of gardenias are rotting and cannot be saved, we can trim the branches of gardenias for water culture, which roots easily, especially in the hot summer, the roots grow quickly.

Water culture of gardenias, pay attention to three aspects: quick root emergence, dense and numerous roots for easy survival:

1. Water changing

When doing water culture with gardenias, do not change the water frequently. Only change the water when it becomes slightly turbid. Frequent water changes can make it difficult for gardenias to adapt to the environment. In fact, during the hot season, the products of gardenias' respiratory process can easily cause water to become turbid, so changing the water at that time is sufficient.

2. Light exposure

It is recommended to expose gardenias in water culture to plenty of sunlight. If it is the hot summer, avoid the midday sun. Usually, we place them on the balcony for care. As long as the water temperature is not too high, there is no problem. Note that in the summer, if the water temperature rises, change the environment, as high water temperatures can damage the branches.

3. Avoid fertilizing when roots are shallow

This is also very important. If fertilized before rooting, it can increase the mineral elements in the water, which can cause the branches of the gardenias to dehydrate. Once there are fibrous roots at the wound, applying a light fertilizer to supplement nutrients will quickly lead to dense and numerous roots.

When the emerging roots are about 4 inches long and flexible, they can be transplanted into a pot.
