Geranium cutting time and method
Today, the editor will elaborate on the cutting time and methods of geraniums and share some related experiences about the cultivation of flowering plants at home. Keep reading!
Geraniums have pure white flowers with a strong fragrance, and many people like to grow them. Some flower friends may find that the branches grow too long and need to be cut off, which is very wasteful. However, the cuttings may not survive. What should we do? In autumn, we can also cut the geraniums, and the temperature is very suitable, making it easy for the cuttings to survive. Today, I will introduce three cutting methods to you. If you follow the steps, the cuttings can grow roots in less than a month.
1. Vermiculite
Vermiculite is an expanded material and is commonly used in insulation materials. In gardening, we also use some horticultural vermiculite. The particle size of the vermiculite should be between 1 to 3 millimeters. Use disposable transparent cups and make three to six holes at the bottom with a soldering iron. Fill the cups with vermiculite, then cut the branches of the geraniums. Both new, tender, and old branches can be used. The bottom of the stem should be exposed for about 3 centimeters and cut at an angle. Insert the stem into the transparent cup filled with vermiculite, then find a large tray, add water to it, and place the cup with the cuttings into the tray.
It will slowly absorb water from the bottom and completely wet the vermiculite. The branches will be tightly packed without any looseness. Add water when the bottom tray is dry, move it to a location with at least half a day of sunlight, and ensure good ventilation. Keep the bottom tray full of water, and under the premise of ensuring good ventilation, the roots will grow within two to three weeks, gradually reaching the outer wall of the transparent cup. When there are enough roots visible, you can wash off the vermiculite and transplant it into the soil.
2. Perlite
Perlite is also an insulation material, white and very light. In gardening, there are many horticultural perlites with a particle size of about 3 millimeters, and no more than 6 millimeters. Find a transparent cup, make holes at the bottom, fill it with perlite, and cut the branches (whether old, thin, or tender) at an angle, leaving a 3-centimeter stem, and insert it into the perlite.
Find a tray, add water, and place the cup in it to let it absorb water naturally. Then place it in a location with good sunlight and ventilation, ensuring that the bottom tray always has water. Within two to three weeks, the roots will grow to the outer wall of the transparent cup. When there are many white roots, you can wash off the perlite and transplant it normally. This method is similar to vermiculite cutting, but I feel that it roots faster. You can try it.
3. Nutrient soil
It is easy to buy nutrient soil on the market, and it is also very good for cutting. However, nutrient soil cutting can easily cause black stems. We need to choose branches with high hardness, not tender branches, and old branches can also be used. The length of the branches should be about 10 centimeters. Cut off the leaves, leaving only a few small ones. Cut the bottom of the stem at an angle, expose 2 to 3 centimeters of the stem, insert it into the nutrient soil 2 to 3 centimeters deep, and water it thoroughly. Add root growth hormone and carbendazim to the water to prevent rot and promote root growth.
After cutting, place it in a location with scattered light and good ventilation. Water it when the soil surface is dry, and it will root within a month. Remember to use a container with a mouth diameter of about 10 centimeters, not too large, as a larger container may cause slow drying and lead to black or rotten stems. It is best to use one cup per seedling. This way, the soil will dry quickly, and we can water it in time and ensure ventilation, which will help it root quickly.
All these three methods are suitable for cutting in autumn, and the rooting speed is very fast because the temperature in autumn is just right, not too high or too low, so the rooting speed is relatively fast. If you don't know how to cut, you can try it.
