1. Sowing technique. Since the seeds contain more moisture, sowing should be carried out promptly after harvesting, otherwise the germination rate will be low or even lose vitality. Containers with good drainage and ventilation, such as earthenware pots or wooden boxes, should be disinfected with potassium permanganate solution and prepared. The two simple and feasible methods for sowing Clivia are river sand sowing and sawdust sowing. River sand sowing involves using fine river sand, which is washed with clean water and boiled with hot water for disinfection, then placed in the container and leveled with a 2 cm interval. Arrange the seeds on the sand surface with the bud eye downward and cover with a thin layer of sand. Sawdust sowing involves using sawdust of appropriate thickness, which is sterilized by frying in a pan or steaming, then placed in the container with a thickness of 7 to 10 cm. The bud eye is downward, the spacing is the same as before, and the seeds are covered with sawdust. Water thoroughly, and then cover the mouth of the container with a film or glass.
2. Moisture and temperature retention. After sowing Clivia seeds, they require a suitable environment of humidity and temperature. River sand has good water permeability but poor water retention. If the surface of the pot is not humid enough, water or spray water immediately to keep the moisture content at about 40%. Sawdust has strong water permeability and absorption, so it should be watered or sprayed once a day to keep the sawdust moist. The suitable temperature for Clivia seed germination is between 20°C and 25°C. However, the temperature of river sand is low, and the temperature of sawdust is high, so the temperature can be adjusted according to the sowing medium and season. If the temperature and humidity are well controlled, the seedlings can emerge in 30-40 days when sown in river sand, and earlier when sown in sawdust.
3. Transplanting and planting. When the seedlings have grown one leaf, they can be moved from the sowing container for transplanting. Generally, a flower pot with a diameter of 10 cm is used, filled with loose, well-draining fine cultivation soil, and 3 seedlings are planted in each pot. Before planting, dig three holes slightly larger and deeper than the seedlings, then take out the seedlings, hold the plant with one hand and insert the roots into the hole, and use the other hand to fill the fine soil. Finally, water thoroughly and place it in a shaded area for a few days of care. Gradually increase the duration of sunlight exposure. Apply a liquid fertilizer with a concentration of 1:20 once every two weeks. As the plant continues to grow, the fertilizer concentration should be increased accordingly. When the seedlings have grown to 3 or 4 leaves, they can be planted. Use a pot with a diameter of 10 cm, plant only one seedling per pot, and manage it according to the seedling's water and fertilizer management method.
