Recently, some flower enthusiasts have asked Pang pang to introduce wisdom Cymbidium, so let's talk about the plant known as one of the "five trees and six flowers" in Buddhism—wisdom Cymbidium.
What is wisdom Cymbidium?
In Buddhism, there is a bodhisattva named "Manjushri Bodhisattva," who symbolizes wisdom. Wisdom Cymbidium is named after him and is called "five trees and six flowers" along with bodhi tree, banyan, betel palm, sugar palm, finger lotus, turmeric flower, frangipani, plumeria, and golden lotus. It is also known as Wenzhu Orchid, eighteen scholars, green dyke flower, etc.
Although there is a "lan" character in its name, it does not belong to the orchid family but to the Amaryllidaceae family. Wisdom Cymbidium has broad leaves and flowers from June to August every year. The flower spike extends from the center of the leaves and can reach up to 1 meter.
When in full bloom, the flowers radiate from the base to the surroundings, usually with 18 small flowers per spike, hence the name "eighteen scholars." The flowers are white, petals are lobed, the pistil is light red, and the anther is linear. In the evening, it gradually emits a fragrant aroma, hence it is also called "fragrant orchid."
In ancient times, wisdom Cymbidium also symbolized the unity of couples and the sharing of difficulties. Couples would exchange wisdom Cymbidium to express their feelings.
Key points for maintenance
In daily maintenance of wisdom Cymbidium, we need to start from the following five aspects.
Potting soil
Wisdom Cymbidium has a large plant shape and developed roots, so we need to choose a larger and deeper pot to plant it to meet its strong root system.
Wisdom Cymbidium has a very strong adaptability to soil, being salt-tolerant, drought-resistant, and flood-tolerant, so it can grow by the seaside. As long as you don't use poor soil, there usually won't be any problems. If you want it to grow faster, it is recommended to use nutrient-rich soil.
Temperature
Wisdom Cymbidium prefers warmth and is afraid of cold, with the most suitable growth temperature being 18-22°C. In summer, when it's too hot, you need to spray water to cool down; in winter, special attention should be paid to keeping warm, as it will be frostbitten and die if the temperature is below 5 degrees.
Watering
Many flower friends' plants die not from drought but from excessive watering. Wisdom Cymbidium is drought-resistant and flood-tolerant, so it's fine to water it more or less. As long as you don't water it every day, it usually won't die, making it easy for新手 flower friends to take care of.
Sunlight
Wisdom Cymbidium likes light but not harsh sunlight, and it is slightly shade-tolerant. It can be directly exposed to the sun in spring, autumn, and winter, while in summer, it's best to give it shade and avoid the strong midday sunlight. Its vitality is very strong, and it won't die if it's not shaded in summer, but its growth will be affected.
Fertilizing
Spring, summer, and autumn are the peak growth seasons for wisdom Cymbidium. You can apply high-nitrogen fertilizer every 15-20 days, such as cow and sheep manure, foliage plant nutrient solution, etc., remember to apply thin fertilizer. In summer, wisdom Cymbidium will bloom, and when the flower spike appears, switch to high-phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, such as monopotassium phosphate, every 10 days or so.
