How to Graft Osmanthus Tree
A brief knowledge sharing with you on how to graft an osmanthus tree and the related introduction of the grafting methods and timing for green plants, as follows:
The fragrance of osmanthus is unique, loved by many friends, especially when the osmanthus tree is full of flowers, the fragrance lasting and pervasive, refreshing the mind. So how to graft osmanthus? Usually, we choose to graft the osmanthus tree in spring and autumn, with spring being the best time, mainly using the cut grafting method and the slot grafting method. How to do it specifically? Let's continue reading!
I. The Timing for Grafting Osmanthus Tree
Generally speaking, the best time to graft an osmanthus tree is in spring, because spring is when everything revives, and plants grow very fast, with a warm and humid climate that is conducive to the healing of the grafting joint.
II. The Methods for Grafting Osmanthus Tree
Previously, we mentioned that the common methods for grafting osmanthus trees usually include cut grafting and slot grafting. Based on long-term practical work, we have found that both grafting methods have their suitable time periods. Cut grafting is more suitable for spring, while slot grafting is the best choice for autumn. Now it's spring, so let's mainly talk about cut grafting.
1. Preparing the Rootstock
First, find a plant with good growth, select one of the thicker branches as the rootstock. Then, when preparing the rootstock, cut the branch horizontally 10-15CM from the ground, and dig a U-shaped slot on one side of the rootstock, about 2.5CM in length, not too deep, just exposing the xylem.
2. Handling the Scion
Select a one-year-old, healthy and disease-free branch from a strong mother osmanthus tree to use as the scion. Make sure the scion has 2 leaves and 3 new buds, then cut one side of the bark at the bottom of the scion to expose the xylem.
3. Grafting
Place the prepared scion into the U-shaped slot of the rootstock, making sure the xylem of the scion and rootstock fit closely together, and finally tie them securely with a string. If the grafting is successful, the plant will grow normally after a while.
