The fragrance of osmanthus is unique, and many friends enjoy it, especially when the osmanthus flowers fill the tree, the fragrance lasts and pervasive, refreshing the mind. So how to graft osmanthus? We usually choose to graft osmanthus trees in spring and autumn, with spring being the best time, mainly using the cut-grafting method and the inlay-grafting method. How to do it specifically? Let's continue reading!

Ⅰ. The Grafting Time of Osmanthus Trees

Generally speaking, the best time to graft osmanthus trees is in spring, because spring is when everything revives, and plants grow very fast, with a warm and humid climate that is conducive to the healing of the grafting joint.

Ⅱ. The Grafting Methods of Osmanthus Trees

Previously mentioned, the grafting methods of osmanthus trees usually include the cut-grafting method and the inlay-grafting method. Based on long-term practical work, we have found that both grafting methods have their suitable time periods. The cut-grafting method is more suitable for spring, while for autumn grafting, it's better to choose the inlay-grafting method. Now it's spring, so let's mainly talk about the cut-grafting method.

1. Preparing the Rootstock

First, find a plant with good growth and select one robust branch as the rootstock. Then, when preparing the rootstock, cut the branch horizontally 10-15CM from the ground, dig a U-shaped slot about 2.5CM long on one side of the rootstock, and the slot doesn't need to be too deep, just exposing the xylem.

2. Processing the Scion

Choose one-year-old, healthy, and disease-free branches from a vigorous mother osmanthus tree to be used as scions. Make sure the scions have 2 leaves and 3 buds, then cut one side of the bark at the bottom of the scion to expose the xylem.

3. Grafting

Put the processed scion into the U-shaped slot of the rootstock, making the xylem of the scion and the rootstock fit closely together, and finally tie them securely with a string. If the grafting is successful, the plant will grow normally after a while.
