Generally speaking, the best time to graft osmanthus trees is in spring because plants grow very fast in spring, and the warm and humid climate is conducive to the healing of the grafting joint.

As mentioned earlier, the common methods for grafting osmanthus trees usually include cut grafting and splice grafting. Based on long-term practice, we have found that these two grafting methods are suitable for different time periods. Cut grafting is more suitable for spring, while splice grafting is better for autumn. It’s spring now, so let’s mainly talk about cut grafting.
1. Preparing the Stock
First, find a plant with good growth and select one of its sturdy branches as the stock. Then, when preparing the stock, cut the branch horizontally 10-15CM from the ground and dig a U-shaped slot about 2.5CM long on one side of the stock. The slot doesn’t need to be too deep, just enough to expose the xylem.
2. Handling the Scion
Select a one-year-old, healthy, and disease-free branch from a vigorous mother osmanthus tree to use as the scion. Note that the scion should ideally have 2 leaves and 3 buds. Then, pare away one side of the bark at the bottom of the scion to expose the xylem.
3. Grafting
Place the prepared scion into the U-shaped slot of the stock, ensuring that the xylem of the scion and the stock fit closely together, and finally, tie them securely with a string. If the grafting is successful, the plant will grow normally after a while.
