How to control the height of chrysanthemums?
About this introduction to the green plants and flowers on how to control the height of chrysanthemums that grow too tall, the editor of this site will introduce to everyone next.
Every autumn, many flower friends say, "Why does my potted chrysanthemum grow so tall that it falls over as soon as it blooms?" In fact, it's because we didn't manage dwarfing in advance. Especially for autumn chrysanthemums, due to the long period of vegetative growth, they usually grow very tall by the time they bloom in autumn, and they fall over as soon as they bloom. To achieve a better plant shape, we need to control height during maintenance.
Methods to Control the Height of Chrysanthemums
There are mainly 4 common methods to control the height of potted chrysanthemums, and different treatment methods can be chosen according to different types of chrysanthemums.
1. Use growth regulators to control growth
In recent years, plant hormone fertilizers have been increasingly widely used, such as cytokinins, auxins, and growth inhibitors. Among the growth inhibitors, there is a dwarfing agent that can inhibit elongation but not cell division, making the plant shorter and the stem thicker.
During the cultivation of potted chrysanthemums, dwarfing agents can also be used to control the height of chrysanthemums, thereby achieving the effect of controlling height.
2. Prune frequently to control height and promote branching
In the case of home cultivation of potted chrysanthemums, using dwarfing agents to control height is more difficult, so we can use the method of frequent pruning to control the height of chrysanthemums. Single-stem autumn chrysanthemums can be propagated by cutting in June-July each year, and the new seedlings should be topped immediately after they survive.
Topping can inhibit the height of chrysanthemums while promoting the growth of new branches, making the chrysanthemum grow new lateral branches. Single-stem chrysanthemums can be topped 1-2 times to better control the height of the plant.
How to control the height of chrysanthemums?
After the flower buds appear, the side buds should be removed, leaving only the top one, so that the single-stem chrysanthemum will bloom larger and be more ornamental.
If it is a chrysanthemum with a thousand heads, it is necessary to persist in topping during the seedling stage and continue to top until the plant shape is full before allowing it to bloom, or continue topping until after the beginning of autumn and then let it bloom.
3. High-position potting
If the chrysanthemum has already grown very tall and it's too late to propagate by cutting, you can consider using the method of potting. Use a disposable plastic pot, make the bottom hole larger, or cut the bottom off directly, and then place it on the branches of the chrysanthemum.
Fix it at the desired height, add potting soil, and the part of the stem covered by the soil will grow new roots. After the new roots have grown, cut the stem from the bottom of the pot to get a shorter potted chrysanthemum. Then replace it with a nice pot, and it will be perfect.
4. Gradually fill soil
