Hibiscus, golden ginger flowers,Hibiscus syriacus, white chrysanthemums, and modern Chinese roses, which were originally only ornamental beautiful flowers, have now become delicious dishes on the tables of Guangzhou people. A research achievement announced by the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Center shows that using these five kinds of flowers for cooking is not only nutritious and delicious in taste but also safe and reliable.

This study, based on the "Food Safety Toxicological Evaluation Procedures and Methods", shows that the amino acid and crude protein content of these five edible flowers are higher than those of tomatoes, such as the crude protein content of hibiscus, which is 1.7 times that of tomatoes. Hibiscus, golden ginger flowers, white chrysanthemums, and modern Chinese roses have high vitamin C content, among which the vitamin C content of hibiscus is 88.70 mg/100g, which is 8.9 times that of daylilies, 1.3 times that of cauliflower, and 4.7 times that of tomatoes. The dry matter and crude fat content of these five edible flowers are also higher than those of cauliflower and tomatoes.

Dishes made with these five kinds of flowers as ingredients have been served on the tables of restaurants. Starting a year ago, the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Center has been supplying these five kinds of flowers to some restaurants in Guangzhou. The person in charge of a restaurant said, "Since flowers are green and natural foods and also delicious in taste, dishes made with them, such as steamed chicken with golden ginger flowers, fragrant flower bone steaks, stir-fried hibiscus, and Hibiscus syriacus, have become our signature dishes and are well received by consumers."

Acute toxicity, teratogenic effects, and sub-chronic toxicity tests on the flowers of these five kinds of flowers show that the cooked food of these five flowers is safe. Huang Banghai, the director of the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Center, said, "These edible flowers are safe to eat after being thoroughly cooked, but do not eat them raw." It is also not advisable to eat common vegetables like Chinese kale and cabbage raw, as the nitrite content in uncooked Chinese kale and cabbage is too high, which is not a problem after cooking.

Zhou Weihua, the minister of technology at the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Center, said that the center will further study to increase the yield of edible flowers and will also conduct similar experiments on other flowers, such as daylilies and霸王花, to determine their nutritional value and edibility, allowing the general public to taste more flowers with peace of mind. However, it is also necessary to remind everyone that for those flowers that have not yet passed the test, they should still be eaten with caution. Especially do not randomly pick flowers on the roadside or in parks for consumption, as these flowers may be severely polluted and their safety is unknown, which may cause food poisoning and other issues.
