Methods of Propagation for Chinese bleeding heart

Main content introduction: This article focuses on the propagation of Chinese bleeding heart flowers, detailing the methods used. For a comprehensive introduction, please see the detailed explanation below.

Chinese bleeding heart is commonly propagated by dividing the plant or cutting sections of the rhizome. In autumn, dig up the underground parts, separate the rhizome naturally along its segments, and plant them individually. Alternatively, cut the rhizome into sections, each with a bud eye, and insert them into sand. Plant them in pots after they have rooted. Seed propagation requires three years for the seedlings to bloom.

During the growing period, Chinese bleeding heart requires ample fertilizer and water. Minimize moving the plant during flowering to prevent flower drop, which can affect its ornamental value. After flowering, when the aerial parts wither, dig up the rhizome and plant it in a pot, maintaining a temperature of 15°C and a moist environment. In about 70 days, flowers will appear again.

There are three methods of propagation for Chinese bleeding heart:

First is the most commonly used division method. In early spring, February, when new buds are sprouting but new leaves have not yet unfolded, remove the plant from the pot, shake off the soil from the roots, and cut the surrounding suckers with fibrous roots from the base of the plant using a sharp knife. Plant two or three suckers in a pot, cover the soil two to three centimeters higher than the old soil mark, water, place in a shaded area, and manage conventionally after new leaves appear. Flowers can bloom in the same year.

Two points to note when dividing:

① Timing is crucial. If the new leaves of the old plant have already unfolded before dividing, it can easily damage the roots and result in a low survival rate. Division can also be done during the dormant period in late autumn, but the survival rate is not high.

② It should be done every two to three years, not annually.

Second is the cutting method. After the flowers fade, cut off the inflorescence, and seven to ten days later, cut the healthy branches with axillary buds 10 to 15 centimeters long. Dip the cut ends in sulfur powder or wood ash, insert them into plain soil, water, and place in a shaded area. Regularly spray water on the cuttings, but be moderate with watering the soil, keeping it slightly moist but not dry. In about a month, roots will form, and the following spring, you can pot them with soil and plant them. With good management, flowers can bloom in the same year.

Third is播种 ( seeding). After the seeds mature, collect and sow them immediately, but the seedlings take three years to bloom. This method is generally not used for home propagation, but is adopted by garden departments for mass propagation or to cultivate new hybrid varieties.
