What is the blooming method of Calla lilies?

Today, I will introduce to you the blooming method of Calla lilies, as well as the cultivation methods and precautions of green plants and flowers. It's some very useful knowledge, so I recommend saving it for future reference!

Cultivation management of Calla lilies as a home ornamental flower

【Scientific Name】Zantedeschia aethiopica Spreng

【Common Names】Canna Lily, Water芋, Guanyin莲.

【Family and Genus】Araceae, Calla lily genus.

Morphological Characteristics

Calla lilies have emerald green leaves and large, pure white bracts that resemble horse hooves. They have a unique shape, symbolizing purity and innocence, and are important cut flowers both domestically and internationally. Calla lilies are perennial herbaceous ornamental flowering plants with large, fleshy corms, large leaves, long petioles at the base, and ridges on the upper part, with鞘-like folds wrapping the stem at the bottom. The leaves are ovate-spear shaped, with entire margins and bright green color. The spathe opens to reveal a white, bright yellow spike inflorescence that stands in the center of the spathe, with edges curling backward, resembling a horse hoof shape, hence the name. The natural blooming period of Calla lilies is from November to June of the following year, with March to April being the peak blooming period, and the entire blooming period lasting 6 to 7 months, coinciding with the peak season for flower use.

Blooming Period

Cultivated Varieties

Common varieties of Calla lilies include: the white-stalked Calla lily with smaller corms, slow growth, but early blooming, large and round spathes, and white flower stems; the slightly later-blooming red-stalked Calla lily with rounder spathes and slightly reddish bases on the flower stems; and the vigorous-growing, yellow-white-stalked Calla lily with pointed and backward-curling spathe ends. In addition to these, there are also red, yellow, silver-starred, and black-hearted Calla lilies in the same genus.

Native to Egypt and southern Africa. They prefer warm climates, are intolerant to cold, enjoy sunlight but can tolerate shade. Sunlight is beneficial during the blooming period, otherwise the spathe often has a greenish tint. The optimal growing temperature is between 15°C and 25°C, with night temperatures above 10°C for good growth and blooming, while below 10°C growth is poor; they can tolerate 4°C in winter but are damaged by frost at 0°C. They prefer loose, fertile, well-drained, and moist soil. They generally bloom in spring, go dormant in summer, and require ample sunlight in winter to bloom well. In warm and humid environments that are not too cold in winter or too hot in summer, Calla lilies can bloom year-round.

Propagation Methods

Propagation is generally done through division. In summer, when the plant enters dormancy or after the blooming period, divide the bulbs by digging up the mother bulb and planting the small bulbs or suckers around the mother bulb separately. Small bulbs can bloom after 1 to 2 years. The soil for growing small bulbs should be loose, fertile, and moisture-retaining, with fertilization during the growing season to promote growth, but the small bulbs should not be allowed to bloom to concentrate nutrients for bulb growth. Seed propagation is not commonly used due to the difficulty in harvesting seeds and the short seed lifespan. If seed propagation is used, seeds should be sown immediately after maturity.

Cultivation Management

Calla lilies are best planted in sandy loam soil that is rich in humus, fertile, loose, and well-drained. A lack of fertilizer or excessive fertilization can cause yellowing of the leaves, affecting blooming. Fertilization should be done when the new leaves are over 10 centimeters long, with fertilization every 20 to 25 days in spring and every 10 days in autumn. Fertilizer and water should be controlled before summer dormancy. Care should be taken to avoid pouring fertilizer and water into the leaf sheath to prevent damage and rotting of the leaves. Calla lilies are known as the "undying Calla lilies" and should be watered frequently during the growing and blooming periods to keep the soil moist. Especially in autumn, sufficient watering is beneficial for promoting blooming in the fall and winter. Calla lilies enjoy sunlight, especially during blooming, but not strong sunlight. After summer, a shade net with about 50% shade should be used to prevent direct exposure to the hot sun. In autumn and winter, their blooming light requirements should be met.

"Few leaves, more flowers" is one of the key points for making Calla lilies bloom. Therefore, during management, it is necessary to regularly remove the outer old and withered leaves, and maintain 4 leaves during the blooming period to facilitate the formation and blooming of flower buds.

Purification Function

Calla lilies can absorb harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide from the air, and at the same time, absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, increasing the negative ion content in indoor air. Therefore, they have the function of beautifying the environment and purifying the air.
