Prevention and control of the rose leaf-cutter bee "Rose Leaf-Cutter Bee Control Guide"

Control of Chinese Rose Leaf-cutting Bee

Today's focus is to introduce you to some knowledge about Chinese roses, specifically the prevention and control of Chinese Rose Leaf-cutting Bees, as follows:

Chinese Name: Chinese Rose Leaf-cutting Bee

Chinese Alias: Rose Leaf-cutting Bee

Scientific Name: Megachile nipponica Cockerell

Morphological Characteristics: Female adult body length 15mm, forewing length about 10mm, black and glossy, head and thorax covered with brownish-gray long hair. Head punctate dense, hind margin slightly concave, upper part of forehead to vertex concave flat; compound eyes dark brown, simple eyes light brown; antennae 12 segments black; labrum longer than wide; upper jaw black and strong, with 4 teeth at the end; thoracic punctate coarse and shallow, median furrow not reaching half of the scutellum; scutellum sickle-shaped. Posterior margin with dense long hair. Wings 2 pairs, light brown semi-transparent, dark brown veins not reaching the outer margin, forewing with 1 closed cubital cell. Legs blackish-brown, middle tibia with 1 spur. Posterior tibia with 2 spurs; first tarsus wide and flat, longer than the combined length of the second to fifth tarsus; inner base of claw with 1 small tooth. Abdomen visible 6 segments, anterior 2/3 of each segment sparsely coarse punctate, posterior part fine and dense, first segment anterior margin round arc concave, first to third segments covered with grayish-white long hair; sixth sternum wide triangle. Male adult body length 10mm, head and thorax covered with dense yellow hair, abdominal segment hair bands yellow, no abdominal hair brush; upper jaw developed with teeth. Egg long elliptical, milky white, larva grubs without legs; head small, yellowish-brown, upper jaw developed, chest and abdomen milky white, abdominal end pointed and thin, body surface with many wrinkles. Cocoon nearly cylindrical, head end flat, tail end slightly pointed, brown. Pupa free pupa, initially milky yellow-white, later turning dark brown.

Harmful Crops: Chinese Rose, Rose, and others

Symptoms of Damage: Adults cut the edges of Chinese rose or rose leaves into many regular elliptical incisions, causing leaf damage and sparse flowers, affecting the ornamental value.

Classification: Hymenoptera, Leaf-cutting Bee Family

Disease Characteristics: Occurs 3-4 generations per year, overlapping generations, with mature larvae building nests in dead wood cavities, stone caves, and other natural caves for overwintering. In the second year, they pupate in the spring, with a pupal period of 10-15 days. The overwintering generation is concentrated and uniform. Adults appear from mid-April to early May, with the peak period in late April in the south and mid-May in the north. Adult lifespan is about 20-25 days; egg stage 3-4 days, larval stage about 20 days. The first generation of adults appears from mid-May to late June in the south and mid-June to mid-July in the north. The second generation is from late June to mid-July in the south and late July to August in the north. The third generation is from early August to mid-to-late September in the south and early September to early October in the north. The fourth generation is only in the south, from mid-September to late October and early November. Female bees only start to emerge from the cave when the temperature is above 20°C, and they can cut leaves from morning to evening, with the peak activity from 10-15 hours. Female bees cut leaves not for food but for nesting, to store "food" and lay eggs. Female bees prefer to select tender, thin, soft, and fully expanded leaves from the middle to upper parts of the plant for nesting material. Due to the repeated cutting of leaves by female bees, some regular notches are left on the leaves.

Epidemic Dynamics:

Control Methods: (1) Capture adults during the peak period with a net to reduce the pest population. (2) Remove leaves with eggs during the oviposition period. (3) If the infestation is severe, spray 2.5% bromide emulsion 1500 times solution or 80% dichlorvos emulsion 1000 times solution or 50% fenvalerate emulsion 1000 times solution on the plants during the peak period of adults or during the larval stage.

Main Natural Enemies:

Commonly Used Pesticides: Fenvalerate, Bromide
