Azaleas are divided into deciduous and evergreen types. Deciduous azalea leaves are particularly small, and the evergreen varieties have broader leaves. In the southwestern part of China, azaleas are very common, and wild azaleas can be seen on many hillsides.
I. Azalea Varieties
The one above is Western azalea.
Azaleas usually bloom in spring and come in different colors, including common red, pink, apricot, and white, with various flower shapes. There are more than 900 species of azaleas worldwide, and China accounts for a large half.
Nowadays, common azalea varieties on the market include high mountain azalea, white azalea, spring azalea, summer azalea, Western azalea, yellow azalea, and Hong Shuangxi azalea, which bloom in March and April. If you want to extend the blooming period, you can choose some late-flowering varieties, including Gao Yue azalea, which is a very small杜鹃花 variety.
1. Gao Yue Azalea
The one above is Gao Yue azalea.
If you want to plant some small azaleas on your balcony and don't have much space at home, you can also choose "Gao Yue azalea", which has a small plant and flowers, but a large number of flowers, with small flowers densely distributed on the tender branches at the top of the branches, very suitable for growing into bonsai or potted plants. These small flower varieties must be planted in small pots, ensuring good drainage of the soil, and also ensuring that the pots have good breathability, usually cultivated in purple sand pots or red pottery pots.
2. hairy Azalea
When does azalea bloom?
The one above is hairy azalea.
Of course, if you want to grow some easy-to-bloom azaleas, you can choose "hairy azalea", which is relatively simple to maintain, but the blooming amount is not as much.
Hairy azalea is a common type of azalea plant in the southern green belt and can also be grown as a potted plant in the north. Spraying iron sulfate once a month or regularly supplementing it with some organic compost can result in charming flowers every spring. Hairy azalea flowers are particularly large and have bright colors, usually in purple, pink, white, and red, with a very low difficulty in maintenance. If you think other varieties are expensive and difficult to grow, you might as well choose hairy azalea.
II. Notes on Buying Azalea Potted Plants
Many people think that it is difficult to grow azaleas, especially for friends in the north, but in fact, it is to choose the right variety and reasonable maintenance. For example, when buying azalea potted plants at the flower market, you should choose those with a larger crown and fuller plants.
In addition, when buying azalea potted plants, you must carefully check the condition of the potting soil. If you are going to grow them on the balcony or terrace as potted plants, do not choose potted plants grown in red and yellow soil, as these plants are difficult to grow well in pots and usually need to be transplanted for cultivation.
Azalea potted plants should be chosen with nutritious soil, such as a mixture of peat soil and compost soil, or a mixture of fine coconut bran and coarse coconut bran. Such soil has good breathability and drainage, which is beneficial for the growth of azaleas and enhances their resistance to diseases and insects, making them easier to bloom.
For example, a friend just bought a pot of azalea grown in yellow soil, which looks very strong. Does this kind of potted azalea mean that it is particularly good?
In fact, it is not. These yellow soil-grown azaleas require high maintenance later on because this soil easily cakes and will crack over time, making it difficult to blend with new soil after potting. This is also why many friends have difficulty growing potted plants and the old soil cannot blend with the new soil (interlayered soil) after potting because the old and new soils are completely different types.
